Okay so I managed to get Sparks to start a bubble nest in his own tank underneath a piece flat polystyrene =]

now I've got 2 questions!

1] He is building a nest but most of the time he blows bubbles next to the polystyrene so they float off....is this okay? will he eventually get them all under it? lol

and

2] how long does a bubble nest take to complete? will he stop building when he feels its right? or does it depend on the fishy?

Thanks!

I've not added polystyrene to my betta tanks, and they still build nests amongst the plants. As far as I can see from my boys, they haven't stopped building a nest - I think because the slight current makes the surface of the water swirl, they start to break apart, bless. And then it's w/c time, so they break apart anyways.

Hi
Males may build nests whether or not there is a female in view, and also without anything to build under  . If Sparks is in the 10gal with the other fish, you do realise you wont be able to spawn in there?

ahh i see lol fair enough so i guess it wont matter!

oooo no! I bought him his own little tank today! =]

I just havent updated my sig yet hehe

Just let him build if thats what he wants to do :good: It'll break up eventually and he'll start again, unless he gets bored

Gosh, my boys build nests all OVER the place! Betta Crocker (the kitchen betta) had a quarter of the top of his tank covered with a nest - and he hasn't even been here a week!!!

Not to hijack the thread, but I have a question. Is a filter an absolute MUST for bettas? The reason I ask is that I had a filter go goofy one day last week on one of the betta tanks and wasn't able to get another one for a few days. Well, he seemed SOOOOO happy I have now taken the filters out of ALL the betta tanks. They are swimming more and EVERYBODY is blowing bubbles all over the place!! The tanks are planted & heated, of course. I am doing 50% water changes twice a week on the 5, 10 & 20 gal. tanks and 50% water changes three times a week on the two 3 gal. tanks.

So far, so good - everybody seems THRILLED!!!

Sure hope nobody yells at me! :)

Hi Lionmom

Its not absolutely necessary to have filters, just more work thats all :good: The changes you are doing are fine :good:

Thats what I've been wanting find out for a long time, but i was scared someone would shout at me! so thanks :good:

Hi Lionmom and Mewmew

When you do the water changes, use some airline tubing to syphon off the debris from the bottom. We use airline and have tied it to a length of plastic so we can direct it where we want. You can use bigger tubing to remove the bulk of the change though. Syphoning is a lot less stressful than using a jug :good:

I was scared also, but it all worked out. :)

I figure the water bill may go up a smidge, but the electric bill will go down a smidge - so that's a wash.

My tanks are a TON quieter, though, and I sure like THAT!!!!

I do - always have.

I also have a 50 gal. & 75 gal. tank (cichlids) that I use BIG tubing on!!!
