I have an sponge filter in eadh of my boys tanks, but the bubbles seem alittle fast. What rate should it be set at per second? I wouls like to try breeding at some point and don`t want to ruin their nests. :good:

For breeding the rate should be 1 bubble per second. For everyday use, I don't know an actual rate. I always just keep turning it down until it looks as though a nest would be able to survive it lol. Hope someone else can help more :).

If you have some floating plants in the tank they will hold the nest together and reduce the impact the bubbles have on it. Water Sprite (Ceratopteris thalictroides) is probably the best plant to use. Otherwise use plastic plants and just let them float on the surface.

try not to have the bubbles going too slowly otherwise the filter won't work effectively

i normally have the valve half way, thats a good flow rate without disturbing the nest :)

when I am actualy breeding I lower the water level so that the top of my tube sits above the water line, water is at about 6-8 inches, then the bubbles do not disturbe the nest at all.

when not breeding I let all my filter go at full bore....as long as its not slamming the betta into the glass or substraite I consider it good excercise for them, eventualy all of my bettas gain enough swimming power to swim where ever they want then no mater the water flow.

the only major thing I do to the filter however is sew some fine mesh netting over the intake tube to keep delicate fins from getting sucked in.
