for some reason, brown algae only grows on the side of the aquarium where there's light. why is this?

ps it's an incandescent hood, with room for two bulbs.

then how come only areas with light get covered in brown algae, while areas with little or no light get no algae at all?

Do the area's which don't have brown algae happen to be ones with live plants growing on or near them? What sort of fish do you have in the tank currently?

i have no live plants. it's my 10 gallon tank, fish are in my sig.

Test the water for nitrates- they are part of an indication to how many nutrients there are in the water. Tanks with no lighting tend to be a lot more prone to algae problems since there are no live plants to use up the excess nutrients in the water, and without the live plants the algae takes their place and blooms.
