A friend of mine has got some Fairies that he has had for around a year, maybe a bit longer... I went to have a look at them the other day as he has been telling me that they're not doing anything, the tank seems like it's 'dead' as he put it. He was having the few community fish from me that i needed to get rid of. I couldn't believe what his fairies looked like when i saw them! :-(

They are tiny compared to mine!

He told me he had a test kit, it was the strips when i got there. Did it anyway, and according to that the pH is only around 6. I think i have talked him into letting me have them to try and give them a better home. He hadn't accomodated their needs at all, only shelter was 2 skulls that looked hideous imo. I tried to advise him on a nice setting but all he kept saying was his mate at the lfs told him they're ok in a community tank as they like being out in the open...

My question is, could the pH be the limiting factor in their growth? Also when he spoke to his 'mate' at the lfs, he told him to find out what they are as there is about 5 different 'fairy cichlids' Is this correct?

Hey minnnt, I cant answer all your questions but I know when I was looking into fairy cichlids (as you may remember) their were atleast three different species that could be deemed fairy cichlids.

You have the ones that you have.

Then the Daffodils which have yellow tinted fins and are slighty smaller I believe.

Another were like yours but have much longer faces.

So I can't be more specific their are probably a few more than I mentioned also.

Thanks RTC. I have just had a look into it a bit more. I knew there was the 'daffodil' of which i have watched a video on youtube of that and a 'fairy' having a bit of a fight. vicious to say the least!!

I know this is where the common names fall foul. But i would have called that a Daffodil and not a Fairy? It's like calling all of the Thorichthys species Firemouths... :/ lol.

Theres a few yes. Ive also noticed LFS selling them as community fish saying there peaceful etc aswell.

Have you any more info bullit? I am wanting to learn. I believe there is an albino form? The ones in question are the same as mine.
