Ive decided that my boys and girls deserve a bit of action :hey: so Im going to do a slight cold water change but not sure what the ideal temp should be? Any Ideas?

Also Ive read somewhere that they like to Breed after a nice meal high in protein so going to give them some Frozen Brine Shrimp.

Is there any other ways I can assist without actually doing it myself? :hey:

Park the tv in front of the tank and show them 'Dirty Dancing' or something to make them jiggy :hey: or Fatal Attraction :*

Most cichlids will breed after a water change unless they're on a 30 day cycle like N. Brichardi (then it make no difference  ). Brine really doesn't have that much protien more carotine (for color) even then it's pretty much a filler. You'd get better result feeding twice a day than power feeding extra protien. As for the temp it should be warmer to induce breeding (depending on what you keep an extra 2 or 4 degrees will do the trick).

After every weekly cold water change the following morning i have fish with gob-fulls :D

aparently the temperature can mimic conditions in the lake (wet season where the temp of the water drops) indicating the start of breeding season.

That said, most fish aren't wild and spawn when they like, altohugh fish tend to have 6 week cycles i'm led to beleive and certainly my fish tend to spawn 6 weeks at a time..

There are also ruomers flying around that an increae in temperature during spawning will yield a hight female to male ratio of fry. That is certainly true of other non-cichlid fish i've been told about (not all) but not sure if it holds water for malawis?

Hope that helps.

Ditto, that is exactly what I have found. :good:

I have had great success with doing cold water changes, I only started doing this about 6 weeks ago and i went from no fry to 3 lots and also now have 2 w/c holding ( Finally got f1 afra red tops on the way ) :good:

sorry to hijack this thead. Great news on the fry though.

To be honest i dont know how you guys do it, i have 3 wild cynotilapìa afra mbamb, 1M 2F, and i have been trying to breed these for over 7 months now, using the techniques above and i have got nothing to show. Not even a mouth full at any piont. I am thinking the Male is gay :good: ??

Regards

PS: Minus the Dirty Dancing techique!!!

Other than tips already mentioned ie candlelight, choccies etc just a nice large cold water change always does it for mine. You sure you have a male and female not two females? :)
