breeding swordtails

Going by the behaviour of our swordies you need do nothing, just leave them to it. Approx every 4-5 weeks our female has a new batch of fry, we now have two new females (still very young) to try & take the pressure off her.

Sounds like you have a good ratio there. Swordtails, like most livebearers, are a "just add water" fish when it comes to breeding. Give them some time together, and they'll do the work.

Try conditioning them with various foods like bloodworm, algae based flakes and colour conditioning flakes (i use tetramin crisp)

lol my swordtails wont stop breeding either so far i have 1 male to 5 females and i have given 2 males and 2 females away. They weren't cared for in the home they went to and just simply die.....wasn't happy!!!

I have Pinapple Swordies which breed very well, given the right conditions.

Not to get off topic, but nuttyfishgirl, do you have any pictures of your swordies? I'd love to see the white ones with red cheeks you have in your signature. They sound really neat!

i keep all my big livebearer broodstock in my 15g i think i just got up to 18 in there which is to manyi need to fire up another tank soon as it is a pain to overstock. I have a 55g which i keep my fry in and it is at maximum capacity at about 250 little guys from newborns to ready to go to the store. Its yardsale season so i am wanting to find a 29 and a 75 that should help me out for another couple months. I have a hard time keeping swordtails in this region of the world. Our water is incredibly hard and i attribute so if it to that we also have really high ph also any idea what is Ideal for swordies as i would like to raise some pineapples.
