I just bought two platys and i forgot the names of them ( :X ) They are slightly transparent and have stripes down the sides, does anyone know how hard they are to breed?
I was told by the shop owner that they are quite new on the market!
Thanks a lot Joemuz

what colour are the stripes?

A photo will do better though

Without a photo it is quite diffcult to tell. I don't think I've heard of anything that looks like this. If they are Platies, just like the ones you find in local fish stores, there shouldn't be any problems breeding. Platies basically eat and mate in nature. You're feeding them, so they're taken care of there. That just leaves one thing for them to do...

I cant get any pics up which makes it realy difficult, and i cant find any on the internet of something simelar. They are very small like neon tetra length. The man at the shop said that they are new on the market and that they looked like they had a bit of mikey mouse platy in them?
All the best Joemuz

Found out what species they are.........................
.....................wait for it................................
.....................Tiger Platy!
Has anybody got any details on this fish and anybody bred these before?

Cheers Joemuz

They are platys, regardless of what "type" they are. Usually the name in front of it describes the patterns; it is not a new species. They will breed like any other platy, which is simply putting a male and female together. :) For certainty of success, put 2 or 3 males to every female in case a male has trouble. Platys are simple to breed.

What do you mean that they are platys whatever they are?
Of course they are platys, but dont you tank intrest in all the different species???
Sorry if this sounds rude?

The Tiger Platy is a relatively new variety of the platy ( don't have them here yet); but a platy is still a platy. Its requirements remain the same as for other platies. In some varieties though they may not breed as readily or as often as some hifins but basically they are hardy easy fish to breed and care for. I have several different varieties myself and love them other than the fact that mine seem to be baby machines. They breed quite readily and are always preggers. As chibi said all you need is a male and several females and look out; babies everywhere.

Larry, they can, in fact, interbreed. I'm pretty sure the fry are fragile, though. Platys and swordtails are very closely related... they are of the same genus, but are different species.

And Joe, don't worry, I wasn't offended. :) Varieties and species can be confusing.
