Breeding Pearls

I know they're bubble nest builders, and i know all the basics of breeding gouramis, just on a lot of sites it says they need surface plants to breed (also seen the styrophome cups to help).
is this true? And if so, do they need live plants, or are you able to use something to simulate the surface plants ? like fake plants even.

You can use anything that floats on the surface. It is more for the fish to anchor the bubblenest on to.
Many people use artificial plants because they don't need light or fertiliser. Others se a piece of polystyrene foam or foam cup.
