in the near future im looking to have a go at breeding guppys but atm im just doing my research. Ive heard that i need 2 female for every male, atm i have 5 males. I was wondering if in large groups the ratio becomes smaller, perhaps i can have 5 males and 7 females? i didnt really want to put in another 10 so may remove sum of the males if this is the case.

Thanks for reading

you need to have atleast twice as many females as males
what size tank do you have and what other fish is in there

i only have a 23 us gallon sized tank,i currently have 5 male guppys, 1 cory and 2 bristlenose, so sticking in another 10 female guppys is not summit i wanna do. I will either look to remove a few of the males, which is not something i want to do, i forgot the idea all together.

You have it right Tr0p1cal. As the numbers get big enough, you can reduce the male female ratio. Once you have a tank full of half grown fry, they will be in about equal numbers with no real problems. If you are not going to select particular males to put with well chosen females, just get a few females to get started. They all come pregnant from the store anyway so you don't need a male to start off.

so ur saying i could buy 5 females and they wont get bullied? or i cna buy 3? or that im need more like 7? sorry that sounds abit confusing.

I wasn't thinking of the ones that you already have. You could get 6 or 7 females and they would be fine really. Once you have enough there is little problem with being a little too heavy on males like you would be.

I only started with 1 male and 1 female in my 14gal. Now I have tons of males in their own 10 gal and females w/babies in the 14.

You might want to get another tank if you want to breed. Also by 2-3 months, males and females can be seperated if you want.
You will have lots of babies before you know it

Take care and have fun with them. :good: :D
