Since so many people seem to breed their fish I was just wondering how long did you wait until you got started. Please include what fish you started to breed as well. Although I'm still new to the hobby, I can't see myself getting into breeding fish as it seems like too much work for me. I simply enjoy providing them with a nice home and observing the little guys. :)

Same with Prankster. My Swords and Mollies just make babies whenever they feel like it. I will probably breed my cories at some point, but I wont have a time constraint on it... more like, "hey, I feel like having some fry now"

Hi there,

Only started with the specific intention of breeding this year after 15+ years of fish keeping. It did involve building a 27 tank fish room though!!! and specifically setting the goal of breeding South American Dwarf cichlids

My platies make babies all the time with no help from me.

I have recently decided to TRY to breed by Denisons Barbs but I am expecting that to take allot of effort, and be almost impossible; I am going to try though....

I used to breed Jewel cichlids about 5 years ago, and my father claims we bred Kribs in my old tank but I can't remember :p I also had some rainbow cichlids breeding last year, as well as a few failed Mogurnda gudgeon breeding attempts. I can probably breed most of the fish I have, but it just leads to problems down the road :dunno:

I had been keeping fish for a few years before I started to breed anything (other then swords). I had 5 gold barbs in a 35 gallon tank with some cherry barbs and a RTBS. The gold barbs started laying eggs almost weekly so I removed the rest of the fish, and left the female who had been laying eggs along with 2 males. I raised 2 batches of gold barbs from this trio. I found it to be a lot of work though -but still a lot of satisfaction. Now I only keep cichlids and they are doing a fine job of breeding / raising there own fry.

Started with platys, who breed themselves. This got the bug started, & led to angels. I've bred tons of angels, good sellers that pay for fish gear. I just recently bred some cons, got a pair cheap, something to try just for fun. I have some adult albino bristlenose that I have been growing out, once I get some tanks cleared out, I'd like to give them a shot. Been thinking about trying apistos, don't seem to see too many around this neck of the woods.

I had about a 3 week trial of breeding platies and swordies, all of which died within a few weeks..I got 5 fry from 2 females, all of which died maybe a month or so later..

^^Sprry to hear that :( . I started breeding 2 days ago when my platy had fry, but she died from an over agressive male stressing her out in her time of having babies. Luckily the LFS took him back as a donation.

I voted less than a year. We were really into the hobby about 6 months before we had our first convict spawn
