Hi' All,

Was wondering if it's possible to breed Dsicus without seperating the pair from a group of say 6-8 them? I don't have any small tanks to seperate them into. Any thoughts? I don;t have any discus atm but i'm thinking ahead.

Cheers Ben

no , if you want to be able to raise fry you will need to give the pair a tank of their own , whenever my cobalt/red turq pair spawn the cobalt always eats the eggs. usualy this is because they dont see the environment as 1 suitable for raising young.

Is it not possible to cage of the spawning slate/cone to stop the eggs getting eaten?

Also if you get a pair are you supposed to leave them in a breeding tank until the fry are free swimming and feeding by themselves or does the breeding tank become their permanent home? Any idea on the ideal size of a breeding tank?

Might see if i can get a seperater made for my tank if i can not get a cheap seperate tank.

Did you get your discus from chen's discus mark? Thinking of buying a pair from there and building up more as i save more money

you could mesh over the eggs , but i doubt it would make any difference . even if they did hatch the fry wouldnt last 5 minutes with lots of big hungry discus around. you could try a tank divider tho. generally breeders will use something like a 30g cube for a breeding pair . the eggs will turn into wrigglers , which once free swimming will feed off a special secretion in the slime coat of the parents. sooner or later tho the fry will havwe to be removed to a grow-out tank. discus fry are lots of work and time to raise properly , you will need lots of baby brine shrimp ( which can be hatched from cultures) lots of feedings and LOTS of waterchanges . raising discus fry is a lot harder than just keeping discus .

no i didnt get my discus from chens , i got them from discusforthediscerning.com . the guy is called david lai. i was warned to avoid chens as his fish have lots of issues with diseases . ( cant comment as i have not had any of his fish )

if you can , then i would go to leicester discus. he is a bit more expensive than most , but he has probably the best quality discus in the uk , his fish really are amazing .

heres a very useful gtuide which pinpoints things to look for when selecting diuscus

I'll take a look into the cost of a 30g cube and get one put underneather my big tank outside, will run it off the same 24/7 water change system i have setup. Thanks for the advise:) i'll take a look into leicester discus, if they delivery it will be golden. Now just have to decide if the dicus or a new Male Marbled motoro come 1st!
