well my purchased apple snails were shipped yesterday and should be delivered today, However they have been in transit over night whilst we have had a below 0c temps and heavy snow fall? am i likely to find my parcel full of dead apple snails? i guess they will have been packaged well...but would that have been enough :( who knows :(

I had the same worry - one of the forum members had sent me some baby apple snails this week and I was fretting because overnight temps were so low this week, I think around 4 degrees or less. The snails arrived yesterday and they were all closed up so I was a bit unsure as to whether they had survived.

Anyway, glad to say that the majority of them survived the trip and were slinking their way around the tank in no time. There are a few that haven't opened up and moved yet...so I will keep an eye on those and keep smelling them to see if they've died.

They must be quite resilient little creatures to have survived those temps, eh? Hope yours survive the snow.

Regards, Athena

I stopped sending out Apple snails when the temperature dropped too much. I just don't want to risk it esp as the mail is taking an age to arrive. Hope yours are OK.

I hope so too, my biggest fear is that the post is slow in arriving due to the snow and i dont get them until tomorrow, which would be fatal as its meant to be minus 6 tonight. I guess the girl who sent them is from down south and may not have realised how much colder it is up in snowy durham today!! :S

Fingers Crossed!!!

Yup, I know. Had one die a few weeks ago and it was awful - had me gagging! That's why I will take out the ones that haven't moved and smell them every day just to be sure.

Peter, the other thing that worried me was if the water/damp tissue in their tub was to turn to ice... but I guess the sorting office isn't as cold as outside temps, which is prob how mine survived.

Even when they are being transported by van, they are surrounded by loads of other mail/packages, so I should think that would keep them at a reasonable temp.

Hopefully, they will be fine. Let us know!

Athena

arrived today, some are hanging out of their shells so presume dead, not sure on others yet :(

Turns out a few hours in some room temp water has revived my snails!!!! All 20 plus the two free rams horns are alive!!! I'm so pleased!!! :)

Bear in mind they are in a warm van or sorting depot etc. Chances are they will say well above freezing at all times... and they're quite resiliant little guys.

However I agree with Little monkey, I prob wont be sending any out till it warms up a bit. Or will have to charge more for postage to include a heat pack.

Agree with Curiosity, unless you are getting your snails delivered by a postman on a bicycle, then you shouldn't be TOO worried.

I thought apple snails did better in cold water anyway? I read that it gives them a longer life
