my lfs has some bosemani rainbows which i am thinking about getting some for my tank . the ones they have are juvies so still not got full colours. how long do they take to get their adult colours?
Not sure how long they take to get their best colours, but i had some and they grew pretty quick, i had rubbish lighting at the time and may not have seen them at their best. I took my two back to the lfs because they picked on my tetra's. I think they are better when kept in bigger groups thou.
You will be suprised how much they colour up just by being in a nice stable tank mark, doesnt take long for their colours to show, lovely fish, I would say definately get some, group of 6+ for them to be happiest, they change their colours throughout the day too, depends ontheir mood.
I'm a rainbow guy. It takes rainbows at least a year to reach their full adult coloration. That being said, I have seen some rather inpressive juvies in some people's tanks. Here's a hint for you...The darker the substrate the more color your fish will show. Rainbows adapt their colors to whatever is under them. Usually a dark natural gravel works fine. You need to be prepared to do at least 50% waterchanges every week without fail. Bows can't cope with high DOC (dissolved organic compounds) and you can't measure the level outside of a lab. Fifty percent weekly is the standard.
Depending on how much they cost in the LFS you could order some directly from a breeder. Usually it's cheaper to get them from a breeder and usually you get much better quality.
have got 7 in my tank now. the gravel is natural dorset pea gravel plenty of cover but also plenty of open swimming space and black background . they are juveniles but at least 2 of em are starting to show the orange rear end. as for water changes i have good filtration and have allways done 25-30% water change every sunday . so considering that 50% of my water is 50g i think il see how they cope 1st before upping it but if they do need 50% then thats exactly what they will get
