I picked up a pair of bolivian rams this weekend, and i'm not quite sure that they are a pair i.e. male/female. they both look identical.
could anyone confirm?

oh...thanks.
would it upset matters if i added 1 extra male (to the 2 females)?

If you got a really close up of there "buttwhole" to show there breeding tube I will BR able to tell for you. I wouldn't just listen to the other person from that far away and the left one is at a bad angle! Take some more pics:)

Looks like a male and female to me. But I'm not 100% sure! They are beautiful tho!

The way I tell is males have a pointer skinny breeding tube and females have a thicker rounder blunt breeding tube.

+1 on the above 'breeding tube' comment. it is quite difficult to sex them when they are very young. sorry i am not 100% sure either. if i were you, i would not add another male. if these 2 are females it would be ok but if you have a male/female pair, you could run into problems with the addition of another male. i would wait a few weeks. by then, if one is a male, it will be much larger than the other and the 'front spike' on the dorsal fin will be larger and darker. the breeding tubes will also be easier to distinguish. if they turn out to be two females, you may then wish to add a male.

:good:

Yes I agree with Laura!
2 male and 1 female = bigg problem
2 females- will work
2 females and 1 male= breeding pair And one left out

ok thanks. i'll hang on for a few weeks and see if i can make out any differences until then.

why are they so dark ? i have 2 in my tank, sold to me as a male and female, the dominant, largest one is almost pure white in the body, the smaller one has more dark colouring like in your photos.
