I herd these are community fish, but they are cichlids so I thought I would check with some people who know a bit about them. Was wondering if they can be kept with gouramis, tetras, danios and some catfish (basic community mix) if they are conpatable is it best to keep just a single one? or to have two or does it not matter?

cheers any info on them would help

how big is your tank?
and i think there ok with them fish but they might be agressive to the catfish because they stay on the bottom and they will be compeating for food

its a dwarf cichlid, most dwarfs are pretty peaceful, and you are correct, you can keep it in a community, what size tank you got, make sure that you have enough space, and bear in mind that they are not the hardiest of fish- make sure you get bolivian rams instead of the german blue rams which are very difficult to keep

happy days :) ooh, and they need to be fed more meaty foods, flakes shouldnt be a staple diet for them, they need frozen bloodworm, daphina, brine shrimp and the like

for a 125L tank that has driftwood and plants, so they could be aggressive with my bristle nose catfish? do you think I should do it and keep an eye out or not even risk it?

aslong as theres enough hiding places then it should be fine and i think your tanks big enough for a pair but its up to you they can live in groups of on there own

cool thanks heaps, yea I have a large bit of drift wood and lots of plants so plenty of hiding spaces, just saw a pic of one of these guys and thought I would try find out about them

cheers

that size tank is excellent for them, they will be fine with the catfish, what other fish have you got, just stay away from large cichlids, anything else is fine

i kept 2 in my community tank

to be honest i disliked them VERY much.

They chased every fish away constantly =/, so i now have a german blue ram, and that is so peaceful :D

go for a german blue ram, or german gold ram, the one in my avatar is a young german blue ram female AMAZING coloration compared to bolivians, BUT, they are more sensitive ^^

also cockatoo cichlids? but id take a german blue/gold anyday! im getting a male german gold later on ;)

i said that German blues do need better water quality; and IMO I think they are very very manageable.

I almost forgot! they also need higher water temperatures!

Bolivians are a easy to keep not as attractive German blue ram, german blue rams are harder to keep, but i think the end result is well worth it!

in correct! its not worth it, the other fish wil suffer having to be kept in higher temp's

just get bolivian rams mate, they are still beautiful fish and easier to keep :)
