I have had quite a large piece of bogwood in my tank for about 4-5 weeks

At weekend I noticed that there was a film of algae forming throughout the tank.
During the waterchange last night I removed the big piece of bogwood and found that there was a void underneath it that seemed to be full of algae.

I presume that the still water under here could cause algae?
If the algae starts here could it spread around the tank from this point?

Also, I cannot determine what type of algae this is. I looked on a site recommended in another link but it doesnt seem to match any pictures or descriptions.

The algae appears to be an off-white slimey build up that appeared mainly in the void under the bog wood, on the silicone air line and on the rubber joints on the filter inlet/outlet

Any ideas ???

i have some white slimy looking stuff over my silicone air pipes and i have no bog wood, couldnt say if its the same as what you hve got but just to let a know lol

I will have a look later when I get home. It should be on my home computer, if so I will post it for you

There you go... straight to it when I got home. :)
hope this helps

I had this when I had bogwood in my old tank. It went away after I removed the bogwood (although wasn't as bad as yours sound!) and I chose to manage without bogwood rather than with the algae.

Couldn't begin to guess at what kind it is though! Sorry!

Unfortunately this is a v large and quite expensive piece of bogwood that looks really good in the tank, so I am reluctant to just give up on it.
I would rather find and cure the cause to the algae.

Also, the wife likes it so that means it is staying :hey: :D

lol wise man! ;)

I dunno bout what it might be though. I gave up because I found scrubbing did no good as it just came back again and I thought the stuff was vile!

Slimmy and white that's not algea. It's a fungus that grows on lots of wood I would get it on my mopani wood. It goes away over time. Try sucking it off when doing water changes. It will not harm anything in your tank. Mine never spread to other parts of the tank. It just got thicker on the undersides of the wood. It just looks ucky. You could scrub it with salt or boil it again or just wait it will fade away.
