Bogwood? Rocks? Slate !

I'm just starting my first tank as most of you know and i have no idea what to go for for something in the middle of the tank? What would you lot say is best and not to expensive, Have been looking around but i really don't no! lol . Can be something i haven't already mentioned

depends what fish your wanting to keep if your wanting plecs then you need some wood

Im thinking at the moment i am going to get Guppies , Corydoras , Possibly Neons.

I think corys and neons prefer a lower pH, bogwood sometimes lowers the pH and its in there natural environment so you might want to get it. not sure about guppies.

I just bought some wood of some sort maricopa ? something or another. It's going to be inside a tank with guppies/platies/cories. It does lower the pH which is not necessarily ideal for the guppies and platies. Just make sure you do water changes weekly no matter what is in the tank with the driftwood as it will continue to leech the tannins and lower the pH for a long time. Either way I do weekly water changes anyway so I just will keep the water in check and continue to do what I do, but with driftwood in the tank too.

Bog wood won't lower ph very much. I got a tank with loads in and it's only 0.4 ph less than my tank with out any so 1 or 2 pieces will only lower the ph 0.1 - 0.2 at the most . As for a centre piece I like 2 large rocks and a piece of slate on the top to make a bridge.

I was just out with my dog and came across these in the forrest, Would they be okay to put into my tank atm im just scrubbing them with hot water and keeping them clean as possible.

After you have cleanedthem up, put a little bit of vinegar on them, if the vinegar fizzes then no they are not safe for the tank, if it doesnt fizz then they should be fine but make sure they are well washed.

The vinegar identifies whether there is a certain element in the stones, I may be wrong but I think its limestone?

Did that and you can hear a slight fiz if you get close to them but you cant see no bubbles. Would you say there no good then?

no there no good i think there either limestone or sandstone and neither are anygood unless your keeping malawi or tanganikan cichlids

looks like it could be dolomite to me
they use it as a ballast in the building
and landscaping

defo no good if its dolomite as its sedimentary rock-forming mineral so will raise your kH over time only good for african lake cichlid tanks
