Hi ive recently added a piece of bogwood into my tank and the water has become discoloured. Are there any useful tips to stop or reduce the amount of tanins released from this....I'm not sure if the missus wants it in if the water is going to stay yellowish, please help

many thanks

hi the tannings will reduce over time with water changes if you want to reduce it faster add activated carbon to your filtration system

the tannings are beneficial to your fish and will reduce over time

Activated carbon will help to remove the tannins already in the water.

Did you boil/soak the bogwood before putting it in the tank? If not then I'd remove it for now and soak/boil it otherwise there will be a seemingly never ending release of tannins.

Once it's been boiled/soaked as required just put it back in and keep replacing the activated carbon when the water starts discolouring again.

Hi paul,

Best bet is to use activated carbon in your filter/opposite outlet (in a bag). It will need replacing, and will also remove any added medication etc. but will remove most of the tannins.

Some people say 'pre-soaking' the wood for a long period also works, but as the wood degrades it will continue to release tannins, so i dont hold much faith in this.

Another option is to use 'mopani' wood, this has been sand-blasted to remove much of the 'soft wood' with highest tanning concentration, and releases tannins in much lower quantities.

Hi Paul.

The best thing to do before adding the bogwood to the water is to soak and spray it thoroughly.
I added a nice piece when I set my most recent tank up and before I put it in I used to boil it in water straight from the kettle for about 15 minutes, then I would spray it with a shower head or hose pipe. I repeated this every day for about 5 days. When I finally put the bogwood in the tank, it left no tannings.

So, I recommend you remove the bogwood now, follow the steps I did. Do bigger water changes in order to reduce the current tannings, then in a week add your bogwood and hopefully it should be fine.

Although I must say, the tint in the water i've seen on tanks gives it a lovely natural look.

Good luck, James.

Ive got to admit the colour does look good James but as its the missus tank aswell ive got to have a compromise il definitely give your method a go and hope it pans out the way i want it ,il post some pics when ive got it all sorted and let you guys see what its turned out like

cheers

Paul
