Bog Wood Question

Just a quick question, I have just brought a piece of bog wood, and started soaking it yesterday. I have looked at it again today and the water is still as clear as it came out the tap. I read they people change the water daily but I have absolutely no need.

Am I just being impatience?
How long does it generally take?

Not all wood releases tannins; your bit is probably one of those. You could try soaking it in hot water, see if that makes it release some; don't boil it though!

Pour boiling water over it xD and just let it soak in the sink

Soaking it in cold water wont do much, our tanks are 24c+ of which the warmer water will break the woods internal fibre and thus giving tannis. Soaking it in hot water from the tap for 3 days changed daily should be plenty, the rest will be gone with tank water changes

if you're soaking it to get rid of tannins then do as Al suggested above.

If you're soaking to waterlog it so it stops floating then cold water is fine, but it could take several weeks to stop floating.

Thanks guys for all the comments. On closer inspection of the wood I noticed a few types of algae on the wood, so i guess it has already been in water for some time. Also when I brought the piece it was damp and the bloke said they had only just got the wood in.

The wood already sinks like a stone, and after adding boiling water from the kettle to the water, still nothing.

I'm thinking it may have already been soaked? Could this be possible?

you can buy pre soaked wood but sounds like he had in his tanks and took it out to sell

The guys in my LFS are always nicking the nicest bits of wood for their own or the display tanks

As long as you've poured boiling water over it, which will kill off any parasites or snail eggs, you should be fine to add it to your tank.
