So we had this major storm a couple weeks ago that had the power out for over a week. We lost pretty much ALL our fish - almost $700 worth all together.
My clown knife was just getting some decent size to him and looking amazing, but I don't want to dwell, they're gone there's nothing I can do. (had to drive 2 hours away to find a generator, but we are prepared for next time.) So the 55 gallon is set up again, and I have yet to redo my 75 as I had to empty it, clean it out, and still have to set it up. I got some quartz sand and small pea gravel for the substrate as I wasn't too crazy about the larger size blue stone I had in there. Also found some great flat stones from a local building supply place that had pallets of loose oddballs for 15cents a pound.
Sorry this is turning kind of long, but I just have to mention before I get into the blueberry oscar fiasco that when I was sadly scooping out dead fish from the tank, one of them moved! My JD , although on his side, and not looking good at ALL, was actually alive. in 42 degree water. I quickly set up a 10 gallon since we now had power from the generator, and put him and my gf's weather loach (only one of hers that survived, and she had an amazing 72 bowfront African tank set up. (loach was from the 55 mixed tank) JD is doing good now, and has all my respect as I know now why he has his name.
Ok, so onto the blueberry oscar. Went to a lfs today to slowly start up my stock again. Replaced my lemon oscar with one that is actually even better looking. And saw what were called blueberry oscars there. I asked the owner if they were dyed or something, and he said no they were a new color strain. I know I should have known better and should have at least waited till I could do some research, but the store was over an hour away and I got all caught up in the gorgeous looking (fake!) color. I got home, with the 2 oscars, and looked it up online, and from what I can tell, I was saddened to see that they are actually dyed lutinos. I feel awful for contributing to that stuff, I hate seeing dyed and tattooed fish in the store, and am worried that he won't live very long.
I also wanted some feedback on some of the fish I am thinking about getting. I really like the Rotkiel severum, as well as the salvini cichlid. They had a sajica cichlid at the store which I had never heard of before, but after looking it up tonight (which I should have done with the oscar) they look amazing as adults. I was going to change my 75 into an African cichlid tank, but I am still stuck on a S.A. cichlid kick.
