Blue Crayfish

Gosh I hope I didn't buy all males, what a waste of 26 bucks. I read up on the information from that site and it said that back in 2003 they didn't sell females for obvious reasons. But I don't know if it still applies for today... And wow, is that how much a blue cray normally costs where you live?

Their normal crays are 10-20$, but this was the only blue one, and it was marked as extremely rare.

But, this is an expensive store. And it has the best selection I've seen here.

For those of you who live on Long Island, it is in Setauket, in the shopping center with Big Lots! and a GameStop. It is called Magic Isle Aquarium. You really should go. ^^

The most you will have to pay for one at my local store is 15 bucks... But I live where they are native so that is probably why.

lol rare? the Blue Procambarus alleni, te he some hope. they are bred by the bucket load. over here we pay about £12 for a 3 inch cray, any more and you are being ripped off, especially as they come from the US.

these are a really nice looking cray, though not often suited to being kept in groups of more than one. they do well in temps from 17-27c, like well oxygenated water, and really do need a mature tank, especially if you are going to breed. though this may sound offish, breeding is a breeze. pop a male and female in together, if one does not eat the other, you should see eggs some time after the mating. about 20-28 days later you will have a tank full of little crays, sorry but they will not all be blue. the blue is a genetic aberration, much like ginger hair in humans. you will need to slpit the youg ones, as they tend to eat each other.

with no disrespect to this forum, it is probably not the best place to get the correct advice on this, my advice is to do lots and lots of research, i did several months of it, and i was not going to breed!

its illegal to keep them in britain

indeed it is, however the OP is in the US so they have no problem. also it is not that long since these things were on sale in the UK (illegally). even now some of the LFS in the UK are Illegally selling the Marbled Cray, this cray is asexual so needs no male to breed, it like all US Cray, is a plague carrier. this new threat to our dwelling native Crayfish population may sound the death knell for the white claw, and even the Signal. i urge any member to report any LFS carrying this Cray or indeed any other, except the Redclaw. imo people prepared to do this should not really be allowed to be in business at all!
