I was considering an electric blue jack dempsey for my 48" (122cm) 55 gallon aquarium (210 L), but now am considering a blue acara as an alternative, because--from what I have read--they are less aggressive and are smaller than the EBJD.

Has anyone kept any blue acaras or know anything about them?

Any stocking ideas with one or two blue acaras?

Hi just popped this in the New World Cichlid forum as you may get some more answers here :)

What other fish do you have in your tank at the moment? I think EBJD and Blue Acaras are quite evenly matched as the EBJD are a bit more peaceful than regular JDs you just need to be careful with finding healthy specimens first with the EBJDs.

We do not have the 55 gallon tank yet. We are exploring our options and I think we have settled on getting a Raphael catfish (8"), a large juvinile and beautiful EBJD, and we need to order a blue acara from the lfs. Not sure what size it's going to be, yet.

Ah right I see :)

I would suggest starting your cichlids off as small as possible and letting them grow with each other then only add juviniles I have always had a lot more success with this approach than the other way around :)

Got my first Blue Acara's maybe 6 months ago, and have added alot of fish since then but they are easily my favourites.
Always at the front of the tank and beautifully coloured. It seems always happy to see me. Got them nice and small and have let them grow.

I tried ordering one from my local fish shop but the owner said he hasn't seen them available for a long time. : (

Here in Australia they are in every LFS, Guess it sometimes pays to be this far away, although not very often :)

MrCavs would love to see some more of that tank :) Is that the tail of a female Nicaraguan you have there? Pics and details in a thread please :D :D

Sickbound - can your shop get any other kinds of importer? Also it might be worth asking what they show up as on his list usually as if he is searching for the scientific name of Aquiedens Pulcher his supplier might be using their new scientific name of Andinoacara - so it could be worth checking.

the owner of the lfs is very very educated about the actual names of the fish and things. He has had this place open for more than 15 years.
