Whats the best way to 100% blitz a tank after disease? I've just bought a larger tank which was known to have problems which unfortunately wiped out the stock that the previous owner had. Not wanting to take any chances I was wondering what I should use? I have chlorine granuals that I use in my swimming pool - both stabilized and un-stabilized would this be any good or should I use something like bleach? I want to get the tank set up ASAP so want a quick solution.

Thanks in advance.

i got the same problem, was wondering if i could use the ammonia that i got for cycling tanks with :dunno: thought that mite be a better option than bleach that way theres a change that if not rinsed properly the ammonia doen't do any harm while cycling because its needed :dunno:

Milton Steralizing tablets work a treat! If you can't get them any baby bottle steralizing tabs will do the same job.

It acts as a light bleach so wipe everthing down with solution of two tabs per bucket and then rinse it off with plain old water. I even use these to wash out all my nets!

i was wondering that also.. we had a really bad bought of white spot  and i was wondering if anyone knew whether we should clean the entire tank.. boil rocks etc, clean the gravel and stuff.. anyone know? :dunno:

don't think you need to boil n do a whole strip down clean of a tank for white spot, you can get decent meds for that & after treatment just use the carbon filter to remove meds left in water. the only reason i want to do a full strip down of tank is because it was my 1st tank & i didn't do a fishless cycle, only got guppies in it but they have just died off 1 by 1 :byebye: & don't know why but suspect internal parasites going of the stringy white poo  . have tried alsorts with this tank so starting to wonder if its the tank as water params are spot on.

alright, i just thought i'd check, coz the fish seem to be showing signs of getting white spot again; such as scratching on rocks, and one of the weaker looking neon tetras had a couple spots on him today  also we only have an undergravel filter, although hopefully our new rena xp3 will arrive tomorrow!! so exciting.. is that really sad.. i'm excited about a new filter :*)

Thanks for the replies guys. Unfortunately the tank appears to have suffered from TB!!
So I used Bleach as it can be transferred to humans and I have kids so wanted to be 100% sure it was totally gone. However, for lesser issues I do like the sound of the sterilizing tablet.

Oh well, off to scrub the tank a 1000 times now - Don't you just hate paranoia!! :D

sorry to hear that blue have fun scrubbing. think i will be joining you in the scrubbing thing as well  but never mind cos it will give me something to as kids all back in school today yipeeeeeee :D :hyper:

It looks like im getting another tank today, (used).

Is it safe to use bleach to clean it all first, before i begin my cycle? Or should i use Sterilising Tablets that have been mentioned here?

You don't have to scrub if you used a bleach/water solution. I use around an ounce per gallon to clean tanks & related equipment.

To do a tank, I fill it with tap water, add the bleach, & let it sit for around 10 minutes. Drain & refill with tap water with double the dechlorinator, & wait another 10 minutes. Drain it again. The tank is good to go after that, either fill it or store it for later use.

If you used straight bleach, just rinse it outdoors with a hose.

Bleach is the same for all practical purposes as chlorine found in drinking water. It's cheap & most everyone has some around the house.
