Bleeping Snails O.o

Please do not put clown loaches in your tank.

Who mentioned these? :/

I dont think the dwarf loaches are going to be possible really. To have group large eneough for them to be happy could push you over the edge in terms of stocking. To get away with it, your going to need to have some serious filtration, and maybe some further advice on tank footprint, as if the loaches are pushing around the floor for snails, they're going to be all in the same space as the Corys.

Might be worth posting your tank footprint.

If it were me (and it has been me!) I would be doing the following:

cutting back feeding (once every 3 days is fine)
cleaning the tank more thoroughly (to ensure no mulm or decaying plant matter for them to feed on)
smushing them with my finger (the fish enjoy eating them smushed, regardless of species)
putting something yummy in overnight (cucumber, lettuce, cabbage) and taking it out again in the morning

I wouldn't resort to more fish except as a last resort, and wouldn't resort to chemicals ever.

If you can't find any assassin snails, this is the best solution. Please don't use chemicals or get loaches. Neither is a good solution in your circumstance.

A friend of mine swore up and down he wasn't overfeeding, but his tank was infested with snails! And overfeeding really is the cause. Follow Cazzie's advice about dropping the feeding to every 3 days and you'll be amazed.

I plan on getting some assassin snails. They eat other snails, and I'm also told that they breed pretty slowly, so you're not gonna end up replacing one snail boom with another.

They do breed, it's just that the rate of growth is a lot slower than pond snails. My advice would be to get a relatively small number, so that you don't have too many females - 3 snails at most. They will get through the pond snails, perhaps slower than one would like, but they will do it.

To whoever suggested Clown Loaches. Yes, they will eat snails, but they also grow HUGE and need to be in a shoal. Not the best snail munching option.

Chemical snail killers (or at least those that I have investigated) don't actually kill the snail, they just stun them.

THe cucumber option does work, but you have to repeat quite a few times, to make sure you get them all.

I started out with 9 assassins about 10 months ago, and now I have, um. 10.

Send a bunch to the OP!!

I did wonder about offering, but it would be a 10000 mile journey - I know DHL or UPS could probably do it in time, but I shudder to think what the cost would be.

It's a shame you can't send some to me too! I noticed 1 snail in my 40 gallon. I have cut back on food, but I wonder how long its going to take for that little guy to make 100 little guys lol. I took him out and squished him but I dont know if the damage has already been done.

get a bit of lettuce in there weighted down!! put in at night, remove in the morning and repeat!!

L :good:
