I am thinking of a long, narrow, squat tank with some starlight bristlenose plecos in it, and a nice betta in there. The thing is, to thrive and breed the plecos want blackwater conditions, very soft and acidic. How are bettas with that? My last betta, I didn't give much though to soft/hard, acidic/alkaline water, only ammonia etc. I must have done alright, I guess, because he lived a good few years, but I don't want to put one in water that's not suitable.

Bettas enjoy blackwater :) They come from fairly acidic water themselves, and the Indian Almond Trees that drop their leaves into their water cause blackwater. People sell indian almond leaves on auction sites specifically for bettas, it also helps them to breed.
