i heard you can keep 4 in a 10 gallon tank, ut i also heard you need 40 gallons for the fish goldfish and 10 for the others. So is it ok to keep 4 black moor goldfish in a 10 gallon tank? just to let you know, i do not have the goldfish, but i was asking because i like goldfish, but i cant afford a 40gallon, etc. tank

also, what is the smallest species of goldfish?

I'd say the best rule is 30 gallons for the first and 10 for each additional. A 10 gallon by itself though couldn't even fit one for very long.

Keep an eye on craigslist and you can find good deals on 55g tanks. You could probably get away with 4 in there. Goldfish get big.

Anyone will advise against even a single goldfish in a 10g. It may get by for a couple years, but water quality will suffer during that time, the health will be impacted, and maintenance will be excessive to keep the water tolerable. Not to mention it will cost you more in the long run.

There are some fish that would do well in a 10G, if that's your budget. Certainly not any goldy though.

To keep 4 goldfish you really need at least 50, to 60 gallon tank.
Internal filter for a 120 gallon. Best to over filter as goldfish are massive waste producers.

These folks are all right in what they say re the tank size. However, it's not always possible to give the fish one home and watch them grow into the space you've allotted them. Financial constraints and space also make in impossible on occasion.

So, in my case I did what most tend to do. I had a Gussie Goldfish starter kit and had a black moor, canary yellow and a shubunkin in it! All of which were very small but I learned very quickly that filtration and a real tank was what was needed so I went up to a 2ft tank, with filter and air pump. They are now in two seperate tanks; the Black Moor is in a 3ft 160 litre tank with a few other Fancy Goldfish and the Canary Yellow and Shubunkin are in a 5ft tank. All are 3.5-4" in length. The fancier goldfish don't get too huge compared to the Common/Comet Goldfish although some can get up to 8" I am told. My intention is to have an indoor pond for the Common/Comet and the fancy goldfish will be eventually going into a much larger tank, something about 5/6ft x 2ft x 2ft.

If you're serious about this and other Fancy Goldfish then do buy the biggest tank you can afford but do be mindful that eventually they will need much bigger so plan for that too.
