ok so last night my lovley girlfriend got me a med. size african lung fish to put in my 22gal tank i have a black ghost knife that i love dearly and i also have a tiger barb , a red belly pacu and a placo now i have this lung fish i did some research and everyone says diffrent things about them and what not but i woke up this morning and my ghost knife has a gash in his back i suspect its the ling fish but what can i do about this i dont want to lose my ghost knife :( oh and i know b4 any one says anything i am planing on upgrading my tank size soon

What size are you planning on upgrading too? Something in the region of 4 or 5 hundred gallons i hope.

I'd remove the lung fish ASAP, they are not community friendly and need to be kept alone or with MUCH larger fish. Once the lung fish is out you can treat the BGK with daily water changes and melafix to help the wound heal.

i didnt think he would grow to be that big i was under the inpression that a fish would only grow to the size of the tank they are in i was going to upgrade him to a 55 gal by himself and another 55 for my other fish i know that the ghost knife can grow to be quite a larg fish as well but what i dont understand is why the lung fish would attack the ghost with out eating him ?? maybe just to taste test him i guess 400 gal tank thats kinda big like what you see in the zoo isnt it lol he is only about a foot long will he go into a rapid growth spurt like my pacu ??

You might be right - it might not grow to full size - but would it be a happy fish is what you gotta ask yourself. Go with the Melafix as recommended above to prevent secondary bacterial infection in the gash....

Happy Holidays!

Most fish will get stunted growth to a certain extent if kept in a tank too small for them, but a lot of fish will still grow very large or even continue growing regardless of the tanks size. Keeping fish in tanks too small for them will have a negative effect on the fishes health, and at the very least your fish will probably have a reduced life span and quality of life if kept in a tank too small for them.

I agree with CFC that you should start by getting rid of the lungfish and then treating the ghost knife with melafix and regular water changes, but you should also sort out the rest of your fish stocking as the ghost knife and pacu grow too large for a 22gal tank (ghost knife= about 20", pacu can grow to 3ft+), the pleco may also grow too large for the tank depending on what type of pleco it is (since there are hundreds of types of plecos, varying greatly in size and care etc). Tiger barbs are shoaling fish and do best in groups of 8+ of their own kind.

i can see u bought those fish without doing research first that bgk and pacu will get huge

the bgk will get 20 inches + and the pacu well u dont wanna know how big it will get prob around 30 pounds!!!!!!!!! u need at least 125 gallon for the bgk and the pacu is out of the question like the other guy said unless u have a 400 gallon tank

im trying to get rid of the pacu as it is he is rweally kinda i dont want to sound negative but dumb fish i did research the bgk b4 i got him and all and he was one of my 1st fish but he was a gift at the time so i was forced to buy a smaller tank that i could afford as was the lung fish my girlfriend got him for me and she didntg even know what the thing ate lol and the tiger barb well i had 2 of them but im down to one due to my bgk eating one and the pleco is the more common one he is getting larg but not at a fast rate i was thinking when i upgrade i want about a 200 gal tamk amd tp get a royal pleco and another leaf fish i had one b4 but he died for some strange reason
