I've got a few patches of algae that are black and furry. Maybe blackbeard algae? I couldn't find pics on google to see. It's on my piece of wood (2 patches quite far away from one another...1 about the size of a 20p, the other a 50p) and it's also on my heater. I'm not sure if its the same alage, but on some old leaves I get some fine black hairs just on the edges of them.

From what I can read on other websites this algae is tough to get rid of. Maybe due to too much phosphates? I still don't have a kit for phosphates...maybe time to purchase one?

My green hair like algae has improved since I've added fertiliser (as my plants have thrived better), but I think this black algae has got worse.

Thanks for your help.

yes, just like that but not as severe. Especially the top pic. I don't have it that bad. Yet. Maybe cos I chop those leaves off that get it!
