hi

i wont put anything as big as a goldfish in there, and i have a heater and filter etc, so was wondering what it would suit, its going in my bedroom next to the bed, so something with colour would be nice..

never kept a biOrb before so i may not even like it ( have heard a lot of neg about them), but its due to arrive tommorow,so am giving myself plenty of time to plan what to do with it,while the filter is cycling...

any suggestions will be gratefully heard

Platies are beautiful fish that come in red and there are even dwarf platies, i have a ten gallon tank of then and they are very active, they will eat anything, and being live bearers they are very hardy, i have six sunset coral platies which are available at petsmart but are sold as dwarf platies, they are so cute, i also have five baby platies and one has already grown to be one inch in length, you'll have a lot of fun watching them, you should although get some plats from petsmart because usually there are snails in them and my tank has been very clean since i put some sanils in

Well more of a reason to buy one, to give it a betta life....., Cheesy BUT U LOVE IT!! :p

do u not think a few platys would be too much, after all its not big is it and i have platys in another tank, would have thought they needed more room??????

i also have a siamese fighter in a 4ft tank, another one maybe an option, what about company for him?

You could put five platys in a 30 liter tank, its about 8 gallons, five platys and a cory catfish would be fine, also danios are good choices, and for your siamese fighting fish i've read that they can be kept with many types of fish, if you think your siamese fighter is overly agressive i would keep him with zebra danios or cory cats, if he is docile then platies, barbs, and many other types of tropical fish that are fast moving with short fins are fine tank mates for the siamese fighter

if you buy a betta from a pet store that keeps their bettas in bad conditions you are giving the store more money and they will buy even more bettas, its better if one betta dies than a whole group, am I right?

watever you say but buying from a store that keeps their fish in bad conditions is NEVER a good idea

but its not ALL fish shops, and the fish shops near me are very nice, I wouldnt put two betta's in together, I think a Betta and a few platys would be nice but thats just me and im a fish newb so HAY! :p

He's right with the platies, however the cory information is wrong :(

Cory cats are a 'social' fish, it's best to keep them in groups of 6 or more and a bio-orb simply wouldn't be able to support 6 corys, the footprint isn't big enough.

However - I'd suggest some kind of tetra, lovely little fish they are :D (although if you're going with a Betta then don't put in any tetras - tetras would harrass the Betta)

to tell you the truth i've bought from a cory breeder and many other people have told me that corys can be kept a lone or in pairs, i have a ten gallon tank with two cory cats in it, even a 30 liter tank with two corys and 4 platys would be acceptable, ive also read that some of the more peaceful tetras can be kept with bettas

i did have neons in with this siamese in the first instance, and they kept going missing, there are also silver sharks in there so not sure who`s to blame,

i like the idea about the platys,as one of mine has just had babies so i could keep some

Tetra's Dont always harass Betta's, I have 5 neons with the betta and they dont go near him, maybe they are a less nippy tetra

Im sorry fried rice, as I don't like to pick on anyone, but some of the info you're giving out is quite simply bad advice. I appreciate that you're trying to help out so please don't be discouraged and do keep posting, but you need to do some research and make sure you get your facts correct before you give people advise, particularly if you present it as fact as you have done. just a slight change of phrasing would help, instead of saying 'you can have ...' you can say, 'i think ... would be nice, not entirley sure if they are suitable though so do you're own research' or something like that to soften it a little. Sorry if that comes across as harsh but, particularly when giving out advice in the beginners forum, you should make sure you're facts are correct and the OP's often don't have the fishkeeping knowledge to be able to differentiate between which replies are good and which ones not so good.

OK, firstly, danio's are a no go for a 30l bio orb, for small fish they are incredibly active and need a lot of swimming room. tanks waaay too small for them.

cories do need to be kept in groups, a trio as a minimum, 6+ is better, while they may seem 'happy' (still swimming and eating) on their own, when you put them into a decent size group you really notice the difference and i can guarantee you wouldn't keep one singularly again. also witha bi-orb, the substrate is the filter, because it's so sharp it'll damage any bottom dwellers as they skate around on it, so bottom dwellers are a no go for bi orbs

the problem with tetra's and betta is not (in the case of most species) that the tetra's will pick on the betta but the other way around, simese fighting fish are not just called that for no reason, they may be small but they are highly aggressive fish and (although some individuals are the exception) will attack any fish which it deems to be a threat, so anything of a similar size, shape, highly colourful or with long fins is likely to be picked on..... this leaves v few options for tankmates for them so generally it's not advised to keep them as community fish.

there's a pinned topic with recommendations for stocking 10gal tanks, have a look in there for some inspiration.
