I am using this is my Penn Plax canister filter in my 75 gallon. I am fixing to set up another one in my 55 gallon.

My question is this, it appears to be the same thing as quilting pad. What I am wondering is have any of you used the quilting pad cut to fit instead of the ready made filter pads?

My mom quilts and she get the quilt padding in large rolls that can be cut to whatever size you want. So I was thinking it might be more cost productive to use the roll of padding cut to fit.

Any thoughts, yay or nay?

TIA

I would wonder if quilting pad might be too restrictive on the water flow; any sort of cloth will be more dense than the filter floss material. Also, if other chemicals might be in it.

If you want to save money--and a lot of it--you can buy filter floss in a large piece and cut it to fit. I have two Eheim Pro II canisters that I was buying pads for, a package of 3 cost around $12 here (or online in Canada). The store is no longer getting these, so they recommended a roll of filter floss which cost me $4. I have cut four pads so far, and will get another four, so that is a savings of some $32. I kept one of the used pads and dried it completely, to use as a template. It is easy enough to snip the hole out.

Byron.

Most (if not all) modern sewing/quilting materials are treated with a fire retardant so they are not safe for aquariums.

I would second Byron's suggestion to buy a roll of proper aquarium filter floss. I paid about £10 for mine, and will probably never need to buy any more :)

Okay, thanks. Would any of you care to post a link to some of this stuff so I can get an idea of what to look for? I have filter media on a roll, but it is nothing like this. It is very thin and very compact, and filters out 50 micron, or so it says. I would like to have something like this filter floss. But when I searched I found only the same thing I have now. I am sure I am just missing it, but if someone could post a link to some of it I would really appreciate it!

TIA

Is this what you are all talking about?

I actually use the quilt batting from Polyfil. It is 100% polyester. There aren't any chemicals in it at all and I get it at Walmart for cheap. it works just fine for me. Nothing wrong with it at all and it gets a lot of use out of it.

I went ahead and bought a roll of the filter foam from the link that I posted above. I didn't get the big roll that the link leads too. I got a smaller roll just to see how I like that. It will be here in a couple of days and should keep my tanks in filter floss pads for awhile. I should be able to get 20 pads out of it for 15.99. So that is a better price than the precut boxed. If I were going to try to rinse it out and reuse it then the precuts would probably work fine. But I have changed the pads out twice in the 75 gallon, without any fish at in it, and they were icky enough for me to want to throw them away. Of course they have probably been hard at work cleaning the tannins from the water and filtering anything that was in the new sand and such. But if the look of them is any indication of what to expect when I get fish, then I know me...I will throw them out. So I need a less costly method than the precuts if I can find one. And these look a bit stouter than the original precuts so they might even rinse out better. The precuts that I have for this filter do not seem very sturdy after they come out of the filter. I tried to rinse one and it seemed to me to just want to go flat and not hold together too well.

I saw a special sale for the filter pads awhile back that seemed a pretty good deal, but it is not to be found now. I will just use what I ordered and see how I like it. It had good reviews.

I honestly don't know if the quilt padding my mom uses has anything added to it or not. I thought not. But then I have not ever had a reason to check into it until now. If it does not have any chemicals added to it for flame retardation then I don't see why it would not work.

In my canisters, I replace the fine polishing pad, the white one we are talking about here, at every cleaning, which is now monthly. This is the pad that gets clogged very rapidly, and that means water will likely find a way around it. In the past I found that rinsing this pad usually left it so out of shape it wasn't fitting well anyway.

Yeah, that is what I think too Byron, I have not got a lot of experience with it yet, but when I cleaned the filter reusing it did not look promising. So I know I will throw them out.

I use polyester fiber for water polish (used for stuffing pillows & toys) in the craft section at Wallymart...a big bag for about $4. It does a great job of trapping very tiny detritus (even better than Purigen if you ask me). I toss it and replace every time I service the filters. HOWEVER, it is very fine and will restrict flow much sooner than a filter pad. On the flip side, depending on use, some of the filter pads could be rinsed and reused a couple of times.

This is basically what I use except in the quilt batting form. Lol. Instead of just uh...Stuffing the stuffing...Lol...Into the filter, I can cut to fit the quilt batting and put in as many layers as I want. (Mine seems to be folded into three layers so that's what I've been using.)
