Hi All

I have had my tank up and running for a few weeks, well nearly a couple of months now... Anyway, I currently have some brown algae growing on my plants and gravel but this seems to be settling down now the tank is more stablised. But I noticed that off one of the plants I brought from the local fish shop, has bind weed like strands coming off it. I have tried to take it off by hand but it breaks up and doesnt seem to want to come off. Is this the so called hair algae and what is the best way to remove it. I have had a look at other threads but wasnt sure it is the same problem or not... Thank u

I am afraid that I do have pictures of hair algae. It exists to some degree in all of my tanks although most do not have much problem with it. This is a picture of the worst tank infestation that I have. There are a few strands visible in this picture that are clumped together in two larger clumps.

Interesting OM47, makes me wonder if green hair algae likes harder water better. I used to get it years ago when I lived in different parts of the country than I do now (and I suspect some of those places had harder water.) But I haven't seen a hint of it (knock on wood!) where I am now with the very soft, low pH water.

It is about the only kind of algae that I ever see WD. I have had some BBA when I have a new tank and have experienced BGA in my first NPT but all of my tanks seem to have some small amount of hair algae and some have quite a bit like in the picture.
