I have not touched my fish database site in about a year, but it still might help get ideas for larger fish that can live in a 20 gallon tank.

Here is a link of search results for fish with "Min tank length" "equal to or less than" "24". It got 53 hits.
http://www.aquariumdatabase.com/fishdb_lis...mp;SearchFor=24

You can click on either "Max" or "Average" in the "adult size" column to sort the results by those numbers. Click again to reverse the sort order from increasing to decreasing.

From there, you will find many fish to consider, and links to the profiles on this site for more detailed information on each fish.

If you have a 20 gallon long tank, which is 30 inches long - you can change the search for look for under 30 inches.

for a 24 inch it is much as i said, nothing over 4 inches, the Banjo cat being the only exception. and that was the question
What is the biggest fish I can put in my 20 Gallon tank?
so the answer is a Banjo cat at up to 6 inches, apart from that nothing over 4 inches.

How about a Armored Bichir..I think they grow around 14 inches and they look kinda like a dragon...whooo-hoo!

Armored Bichir

or: clown loaches..they grow to around 10" each..you could keep 2
or: some cichlids grow fairly large..you could keep a few of them..ie: the Guyana Eye-spot cichlid. Can be kept in pairs and grow up to 10" a piece.

Clown loaches need schools of 3 minimum preferably 5, and armour bichirs get to 14" and EAT small fish. Aswell, a large cichlid that grows to 10" is going to eat small fish too.

A large fish for a 20 gallon tank would be something like an angelfish, however they'll eat neons. Other (not so large, but none the less nice looking) fish for your tank would be things like Keyhole cichlids or Rams.

yup..You're all right.. they would be way too big for a twenty now that I think about it.
Actually I think I was just focusing on the 'big fish' part!
Oops! Sorry!

you n not keep clown loaches in that tank as the same with the birchir
if you want a largish fish or an odd fish I would go with a african butterfly fish or maby a gold gourmei
I think those might be good options

Uh, no. CLs need at least a 75.

Research before giving info.

Um..no reason to be nasty. :-( I did post again stating that I was way wrong!! I suggested 'big fish' that I would like to one day keep, forgetting the tank size he mentioned and I did apologize for that.

How are angels too small for a 20 gallon? My brother has one in a 10 gallon. He's fine. Been there almost 3 years. As long as you don't get the super-long finned kind.

the normal recommendation is a tank of 25g plus, many suggest 30g. they need a tall tank too, said to need to be over 16 inches 18 better. it appears that the fish may not "grow out" in tanks that are not deep enough. long fin of the larger verities, can need tanks of over 24 inches deep. lol i did say it was my opinion, but it does seem to be born out by the information avaliable.

I agree with Boboboy, a 25G minimum ideally for an Angel with a minimum depth of 18". 10G is far too small for an Angel in the long term. :/

Angels are over rated :p stick a silver aro and a RTC in there ;)

That would be quite interesting ! I don't even think a few newborn aros would fit in a 20 gallon... Those things are like 4" when they pop out!

If it were my 20g I would have:
2 Bolivian Rams (a pair obviously) as the bigish centre piece fish
6-8 smallish tetras of some sort
3-4 otos
1 apple snail
Maybe a group of pencil fish/cories/marble hatchet fish (not all of course, select one species!) depending on filtration and mantenence routine, water changes etc.
That might be a tad overstocked but as the tank matures it should be ok - if you feel you can safely "overstock."
Decorate it with bogwood, maybe some river rocks, amazon swords etc., some sort of floating plant, and a sand substrate and it would be a nice South American themed tank. HTH.

No problem. :good:

I reckon I'm probably gonna go for the following then

Remembering this is going to be a very heavily planted tank laid out like so.

Back
Tankdesign.jpg

Front

The big brown bit in the middle being a big bit of driftwood kind of framing the planting

The green areas being where I intend to plant nice tall plants

And the sandy couloured bit .... being sand!

I might put a nice short grass over the sanded bit to and moss along some f the driftwood

so in with that I will put

6 Tiger Barbs

6 Danios (Not sure which kind to go for yet)

2 Blue Rams

and maybe Red tail black shark (Albino)

I've currently got a red tail in my 24 gallon so I'll see how he's getting on!

By the way do you like my drawing? .... no? .... oh ....
