What is the biggest fish I can put in my 20 Gallon tank?

I've got a nice active tank with a few smaller fish and I have a tank of Guppies

So I was wondering what kind of big fish can I get for my now empty 20 gallon tank?

I wouldn't mind having one big fish or just a couple of largish fish?

Suggestions please?

How about a Armored Bichir..I think they grow around 14 inches and they look kinda like a dragon...whooo-hoo!

Armored Bichir

or: clown loaches..they grow to around 10" each..you could keep 2
or: some cichlids grow fairly large..you could keep a few of them..ie: the Guyana Eye-spot cichlid. Can be kept in pairs and grow up to 10" a piece.

I admit I know nothing about armoured birchirs, but surely you cannot keep a 14 inch fish in a 20 gallon

CLown loaches are also too big surely?

you n not keep clown loaches in that tank as the same with the birchir
if you want a largish fish or an odd fish I would go with a african butterfly fish or maby a gold gourmei
I think those might be good options

now I know that none of these are massive but I like the idea of them :)

6 Tiger Barbs

6 Danios (Not sure which kind to go for yet)

Red tail black shark (Albino)

2 Blue Rams

what do you think?

I'm planning on having this as a very well lit nicely planted tank.

Firstly I think the red tail shark is a little bit to big and active for your tank and the tiger barbs are a little nippy so I would replace the shark with a dwarf gormie and replace the tigers with some phantom tetras :good:

Red tailed shark gets too active for a 20 gallon, and they get pretty big. I'd never put one in anything smaller than a 50 just because of the huge amount they eat and the amount they swim.

Tiger barbs can be nippy, it all depends on the fish you keep them with. I've kept a little school of 5 with other barbs and they're fine, however putting something long finned would make them crazy. I think your lineup, minus the red tailed shark, would be fine. However, if you wanted to put a gourami or angelfish in there, don't put tiger barbs with them. Switch them with some tetras.

agreed. also, blue/gold rams are rather sensitive and require mature tanks, so i'd go with another type of dwarf cichlid.

yup..You're all right.. they would be to big for a twenty now that I think about it.
Actually I think I was just focusing on the 'big fish' part!
Oops! Sorry!

20 gallon can support a mating pair of convicts^^. they will breed like crazy if u get a mating pair.

Is the tank a 20 long, or 20 high? You could do an angelfish in a 20 high, they get big, but not big enough to outgrow the tank. If its a 20 long a pair of Bolivian Rams would be suitable. Something like that should work. Again, if it's a long you could do giant danio as a dither. Clown/Bristle nose pleco will work and get to be about 5-6". A Keyhole cichlid should be okay for a the long 20 gallon. You could do Tbar cichlid also.

Uh, no. CLs need at least a 75.

Research before giving info.

NO WAY.

Realistically, you can go with probably a 4-5" fish max that isn't overly active. Fish need to be able to swim some. There are some gourami species that would be suitable, although I'm no expert on the. Angelfish could work depending on the actual tank dimensions.

the tank is 20 gallons not 20 inches or centimetres, most often they are 24 inches long and 10-12 inches wide and often 18 inches high.

isn't this tank too small for any fish over 4 inches?

I have not touched my fish database site in about a year, but it still might help get ideas for larger fish that can live in a 20 gallon tank.

Here is a link of search results for fish with "Min tank length" "equal to or less than" "24". It got 53 hits.
http://www.aquariumdatabase.com/fishdb_lis...mp;SearchFor=24

You can click on either "Max" or "Average" in the "adult size" column to sort the results by those numbers. Click again to reverse the sort order from increasing to decreasing.

From there, you will find many fish to consider, and links to the profiles on this site for more detailed information on each fish.

If you have a 20 gallon long tank, which is 30 inches long - you can change the search for look for under 30 inches.
