hello folks, wheres the nice weather gone?

As i'm sat indoors I thought I would start a new topic. I have had a couple of small incidents recently were the largest resident of my happ tank, the VENUSTUS, has accidentaly sucked in another fish while eating. the 1st was a 2" venustus which died the day after, and yesterday it was my nimbochromis linni, about 3", the linni appears fine today, just a little scuffed and quiet after his ordeal. I honestly dont think the culprit is doing it on purpose, so I have no intention of seperating him, but has anyone else experienced this and how did you deal with it?

so it's just swimming around and eating but accidently eating 2inch fish while it does it lol. surely it must notice that there is a fish there?

anyway i can't help you sorry as when my fish swallow something it doesn't normally come back out fish or not

and your right about the weather!

:good:

no, there not just swimming around eating, anyone who keeps malawi will know, that when you add there food it becomes a frenzy, and those smaller fish that get in the way while trying to compete for a helping, can sadly become trapped in the vacume of bigger mouths, yes it is accidental as if he wanted to eat the fish, then he could, and he would and they would not still be swimming around in my tank.

and yes the weather is miserable.

hi brewyn, hows things???? could you not move the venustus,or,move the small fish????i had different size malawis with my livingstoni being the biggest.feeding time was a pain.the livingstoni would eat ANYTHING that wasnt tied down lol so i understand where your coming from.

hello rixy, not bad, and you? dont want to move anything as I feel this defeats the object, although I do have to admit that the large venustus has the unfair advantage over the smaller fish. I feed at both ends of the tank to try limit the amount of feeding going on at any one part of the tank, plus the flow of my tank is 400 gallons an hour, so I am pleased to say that this little problem does'nt occur to often, its just sad when it does. I am pleased in this case as the linni appears to have minimal damage. I only have the two linnis and they are not to easy to come by. just on my way out to look at my mates marine tank, starting up but not spending £100s on live rock. cheers. :good:

brewyn

you've been very lucky so far, many times the dorsal fins will keep the victim fish from being able to "back out" so to speak and the larger fish either has to be completely manhandled to get the fish out which can be lethal or it is stuck as stuck can be and well....you get the idea. Seen it many times in SA's & CA's.

IMHO your going to have to move the ven to a tank until your other guys grow larger and theres no more risk of being pulled in.

well I think the linni has learnt its lesson .the first photo is of the linni, notice how the linni is staying away whilst the second photo is of my cichlids thinking they are going to be fed. so jj, you can see what I mean by frenzy. LOL

and mammafish, you are probably right in moving the venustus, but its a no can do situation.

Hi brewyn, I dont have anything to add about your orignal question. I just wanted to comment on the feeding frenzy and how well your fish look. I'm very impressed to say the least.

Or maybe I do have something to add about your orignal question. Are the smaller fish that are being swallowed by accident juv's that you have produced, or are they fish from the lfs. If they they are LFS fish then I might move the big fish, but if they fry that you have raised, you are not really loosing (money wise) just the fish.

Sure if you do move it, dont you have two spare whopper tanks "just sitting in the back garden" that you could set up?

Also on another note, how is the budgie?

:X MY EYESSSS MY EYESSSS :X

are you able to turn the flash off?

try it sometime :look: or try this, take some tissue, like the kind you put in gifts, tape some over your

flash, it dims the flash and gives a glow thats so much more viewable then that blinding  thing you got going on in the 1st pic.

i'll try and give an example if I have time today

you know what mammafish, I knew you would be the 1st to have something to say. LOL have tried covering it with my finger but then you can see a red flash in the tank. and if i take the flash off it slows down the shutter speed and makes everything moving look blaired, cant win.
anyway, thats not the flash, its the halo over my head!!!!!

hello tanks, I cant set up my 1001 gallon tank as I have no stands ready to put the tanks on, good idea but not possible at the moment, bought another 4ft tank, but again no stand. answered your question about the treatments interfering with the filter bacteria.

I really need to get my **** into gear and get these tanks sorted out, anyone wanting to come and help me.
The budgie is doing fine and seems to have survived his little bit of freedom, I tracked down the owner of the bird via the RSPCA and it seemed she lost 12 of them. I mentioned that its beak is damaged and she told me to keep it! I dont mind as he's a sweet little fellor

here's a picture of the little guy at the front.

also, heres my spare tanks in the garden, over 250 uk gallons worth, not to be taken lightly.

Too right not to be taken lightly. I’d say if you get all those up and running, you would solely be responsible for a drought in your area. Have you got plans for them all or do you consider them back up tanks? It looks like a lot of work anyway, and yes you are right (in your PM) setting up one tank that size for one fish would be too much work not to mention expensive.

Would you ever use one of those tanks to house goldfish in your garden. If you could put it in the shade to avoid algae but still let it be visible from the house. I think it would look very impressive to look out at the end of one’s garden at night and see a big lit up tank with goldies in it.

“But let me guess”! You already have a 2000 gallon pond with koi? Wouldn’t surprise me.!!

Good luck with your new feathered friend, those parrots/cockatiels (don’t know as I’m not good with birds) all they all juv’s that you have bread.

Another question have any of your birds ever fallen into any of your fish tanks when you have been doing water changes or do you always keep them under control? It just when I see the picture of your haps (feeding frenzy) I can’t imagine would happen if a small bird fell in?

hahaha. tanks, at the moment I only have plans for 2 of them, the new one is for marine, never been down that road before, and that large 101 gallon tank is for all the mbuna that have been evicted out of my big tank, its 43"x26"x26" so I think its a superb size. I do have a pond in the garden but its an old pre moulded fibre glass one that looks like a brick wall, sadly, it only holds about 200 or so gallons, but its got about 15 gold fish in it. I LOVE THAT IDEA OF THE 75 GALLON TANK IN THE GARDEN ALL LIT UP WITH GOLD FISH??????????????????????? or it may have to house my soft shelled turtles and marbl bichirs when they get bigger. The birds you can see are lutino ringneck parakeets and nanday conures, we breed and handrear them, its there parents, and all the old seed we throw in the garden that has probably encouraged the budgie to stay around.
we do let the birds fly around but all the tanks are covered, even when doing the water changes, we do have an African grey that has flown into the glass a couple of times, stupid thing. oh and I have a South African missus. so I think you can safely say that my real hobbie is collecting African things, not happy with the wife so may have to take her back were she came from LOL.

HALO MY A**!!!! LMAOOOO

have you tried taking a pic from an angle? goof around and play with the digi, you have amazing fish and birdies too!!!! so why not show them off to all your fishy pals!
