Big Problem With External Filter

Right, My brother has a external filter for his fish tank, and one night he let me use his house to entertain a guest while he was out night fishing, and i was ment to turn his tank light off, well i pulled the wrong plug and turned everything off, lights filter heater the lot, and when he got back in the morning the filter had syphoned about a 3rd of his tank onto the floor (getting woken up at 7am to a screaming mother because you flooded your brothers house isnt nice) and basicly he wants to know why it took the water out anyway, because hes now worried if he has a powercut while hes not at home its going to do it again

Any one got any ideas?

surely it works like a gravel vac when off ? no idea dont use on e

Just switching it off shouldnt really cause an external filter to syphon out the water unless the seals are gone and it leaked that way. Does he have an air pump too?, if there are no non-return valves fitted to the airline when the pump is switched off that will syphon out the water.

i think, must have lost the pressure when power off.. locks must be gone..

then the seal got dry and leaked...
