okay, so i have had this HUGE female lyretail swordtail for 3 months now and from the second i bought her it looked like she was about to explode with 19000 fry. well, she has gotten bigger and bigger and for 3 months she still has not even thought about getting those little suckers out of her, but her bottom half of her body has rounded off, she is breathing kinda fast, and she's getting a bit boxy looking. she is eating, not hiding and not just floating. i don't want to move her yet, because 9 times out of 10 with me i prematurly move them and they abort the birth and die. well, this time im not planning on that. nor was i ever. she isn't too wide, but has a huge stomach (not sure if i've already mentioned  ) i can't get a pic by the moment ( my camera is lost and my phone is to slow) is there any more info that i should know, because i think its getting close. btw i haven't done a water change in 6 weeks because of my water being great - my nitrate is 35 ppm but i am planning on doing one tomorrow. how often should i change my water? should i raise the temp? and if its important she lives in a 30 gallon.

Moving temperatures around could be a benefit or have a negative effect. First question is the present value of temperature. If your tank is at 20C, by all means warm it a bit. If it is at 27C, cool it off. If it is around 22 to 24C, leave it alone.

A quick side note: Your female has not been carrying fry for 3 months but may well have looked heavy that long. Gestation for a swordtail is around 28 days at typical temperatures and could be changed by only a few days one way or the other by very cool or very warm temperatures. If she has indeed started showing a squaring off of her belly, she may actually be in her first pregnancy since you got her. Be sure to have lots of cover high in the tank before she drops her fry or you may never see them. Swordtail fry tend top try to hide along the water's surface and will fare better if you have a nice dense cover there for them to hide in.
