Ok folks, what Big Fancy Fish words have you used or herd while in the hobby, in general fishy chit chat or while talking to the pro's. I would say lets just rule out all the scientific species names right now.

 Reverse Osmosis

Multifactoral inheritance... ok, more of a general genetics term, but still :p

Haha.. nice thread Zogat! refractometer, carbonate hardness, refugium - refugium... sounds like a bomb shelter or something...

Genetics terms are always fun to use, especially when every so often, you slip in a word that really means nothing and the recipient of the lecture continues the nodding and 'oh, yeah's.

Most sci names of fish are a bit 'heh'? Trichomycteridae is a nice name. Goes with the nice fish.

dunno about fancy names but i can never pronounce anything fish related, latin names and stuff, completely baffles me

I like slipping ichthyologist into conversations. Most people go "Ichthywhat...oh, ichthyologist!". It dawns on them...you can almost see the lightbulb go on over their head.

Some of my favorite ones are Latin names, but since we're not supposed to go into those, I'll leave it at that.

osmoregulatory... unimpressed? ok, try:

stenohaline vs. euryhaline

that is, spends its entire life in only freshwater or only marine water versus changes from fresh to marine in its lifetime.

Cloaca lol Well thats actaully the term for "a turtles butt". lol But its still funny :p
Hahaha, nice one, I like that word too. Birds and kangaroos also have cloacas
