Wow, congratulations! Looking forward to pics :)

Oh wow, congrats and good luck! I'm just experiencing my first spawn. I've got hundreds of little dudes dangling and bobbing under Daddies nest, it's a great experience but it's going to be a lot of work lol x

hi again guys - sorry about this but pics will have to wait as my comp is not recognising the picture format - so will take a bit longer than i hoped,

the male is a red and blue veil-tail, who is very pretty, and the female is a blue and very dark veil-tail, both great looking fish so should have some amaising fry!!!

i do however have 2 questions- 1 i have now taken the female out from the breeding tank and put her back in the community tank, where she did live hapily with another female betta - but now she has gone nuts and they are fighting like cat and dog!!! i seperated her with a open top net trap, which she has now jumped 7 times to get at the other female , this is obviously due to the spawning , but how long will she be like this ?? has anyone else had trouble with anything like this and how was it overcome????????

2. now that the male jas settled back down and tending to the eggs, how long is it until the fry hatch? ive read on different pages , different info ! so is it around 2 days or 4 days?? and when is the optimum time to take the male out??

Firstly, you should really have had a tank set up for the female to go in. What she has been through is mentally and physically tiring for her and she needs special pampering. I put mine into her normal tank - alone - with reduced filter current and some IAL and some good food. She'll be going back into the girls tank in a week or two, depending on how quickly she returns to her normal buzzy self. She isn't far off but still a little way to go. I suggest setting up a tank for her so she can recover properly and live there for the rest of her days. Always keep more than 3 girls together - the more the better - as they do get aggressive with each other.

My eggs hatched between 24 and 48 hours after the spawning and the fry are just becoming free swimming now. I'll take my male out tomorrow if he doesn't start eating fry before hand :)

Check out the thread "Spawning Teqs", all the times and dates are at the top of the posts, along with pictures and various bits of useful info from other members etc :)

Great pics and congrats on your eggs. As Maddie said it's best to keep the female on her own for as long as possible after spawning. We actually keep all our breeding females separate now as we found that we lost quite a few after spawning them and returning them to the sorority tank, even after keeping them separate for a week or two.

Don't forget also to leave a light on for 24hrs a day so the male can see his eggs and any fry that hatch.

There is a breeding section on our website that you might find helpful :good:

right then guys, sorry not to post earlier today but as u can imagine didnt sleep well- worrrying about the eggs-

WE HAVE FIRST HATCHLINGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!YEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I KNOW PEOPLE SAID THAT THE FRY WERE SMALL..... BUT..........GEESSSS.... HOW SMALL ARE THESE GUYS!!!!

at the moment he is busy rushing around picking all his babies up and putting them back in the nest.,

it was a 30 hour spawn -to-fry stage..... ill post some pics in a bit. - if the camera will pick them up.

yey!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

well guys just to keep you up-dated, the male in now looking after the new fry and as far as i can see we are up to about 50 fry, they are not free swimming yet - they just keep bobbing up and down below the nest.

so now that we are at this stage i have just bought the microworms , and i have read that as soon as the fry can free swim - that is when i remove the male - isnt it???

this is all new to me and i have done research on the net but i am just asking for a bit of confermation.

any advice will be much appreciated.

Heya, you want to wait until the fry are free swimming, when they are able to carry themselves on the top of the water, keeping their body and tails horizontal and when they can right themselves if they start sinking. I took my guy out 4 days after spawning, so four days from wrapping to the majority being free swimming properly. If your male is fine with this then do roughly the same, just keep an eye on him and make sure he isn't eating them.

Once he is out, drop in the smallest amount of food you can for them, they really don't need much. I'm using a vinegar eel culture Netty kindly gave me. You can't see them when they are in the tank, nor can you see the babies eating them, but you have to trust they are.

Hope that helps? x
