It's a pentagonal tank, and quite tall. Am I right in thinking that pygmy cories don't tend to swim on the bottom and more in the middle of the tank?

Sorry Pygmy cories need at least 10 us gallons minimum. You could have the betta and some shrimp? Although some people have found that bettas eat the shrimp.

Says who?
Must agree to disagree on this one but mine are fine in the tank they're in and i would recommend pygmy cories to any small set up. Be assured, if they weren't happy I would move them to one of my other tanks.
If you are confident and do regular maintenance then you can try things out, and see if they work for you. These guys have been in several of my tanks; this one is the first tank they have spawned in. They are a half inch maximum - they simply get lost in a bigger set up! After all, we do have fish to watch them, not to just know they are there and search for them constantly.
In my opinion, a 30l with betta and pygmies should pose no problem if you have a decent filter do a good size water change at least once a week. This is speaking from my actual experience, based on my tank, which is smaller. Ammonia, nitrite, nitrates, all fine and no ill fish or deaths since set up almost 4 months ago (the pygmies are older than that).
