Bettas Living With Discus?

hi i was looking at discus and i seem to have grown a likeing to them suddenly but the proplem i have is one of my tank is stocked with a betta (male) i was woundering if you can house discus with bettas ???

if not then its a shame but hay ho

Discus need pretty big tanks from what I've seen (never looked into them, but in pictures they only ever seem to be in pretty big tanks), have you got a betta in a tank big enough?

As said above they need big tanks but also need high temperatures which wont suit the betta, some people have had success keeping Discus in tapwater but it would depend on the nitrate content of your tap water as to your level of success keeping them without RO or HMA filtered water.

Discus are not a fish to get into on impulse.

well i did read they needed temps of about 80F which my tank is with my betta and hes the most active ive ever seen him but perhaps i should forget about it im proberly getting to ahead of my self lol

I actually have 2 male and 2 female bettas in my community tank.

Yes, my community tank includes a group of Discus.

But yes, they do fine together, my tank has a large amount of bogwood and a few plants in it, so my crown tail and veil tail bettas never really come into contact, the 2 females are generally together, and my Discus swim happily along the front of my tank

That's just my experience, many here will say never to mix Discus with other fish, but mine are all good

They actually prefer about 86F, need a tank at least (this is my opinion, you'll find some people will bend it a little) 4'x1.5'x1.5', preferably more since they do get pretty long and round, they're touchy about water conditions as well, and like wills said, definitely not a impulse buy. They're quite expensive, and take a bit of commitment. and if you ask me, no, a betta would not be able to survive with discus.

I want to see this tank. I'm surprised you can say you have two males in it, unless, of course, your tank is so big the males have never seen each other before.

How big is your tank? If it is the 130 liter then you cannot have them with your betta

I too kept two male bettas in one tank.. But both hide all the time.. If they meet, then there is stand off.. Ps tank is 450l though..

Discus.... You can keep both betta and discus together at 27/28c if your tank is big enough..
