Just a quick question..

I have a Betta in a 5 gal tank with one zebra danio. They both get along fine, every once and a while the Betta goes after the danio and the danio sprints away. I was just wondering how Bettas are known to do with Gouramis? I was thinking of getting a dwarf gourami to put in the tank. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

Don't do it

Maybe add a few more zebra danios. They like to be in groups

 good question Jazz. i am wondering the same thing. just added a male beta today to my thirty gallon which also contains a pair of platys, a cory catfish, and a minature pleco of some sort.

i was going to wait a few more weeks and see how this new addition fits in before i added anything else. i was going to purchase some gouramis as well.

also, i was wondering how you guys have done with a beta in a regular tank set up situation. the guy at my lfs told me that my last one died because it was not happy with a tank full of danios, although i saw no problems.

i think it died of some rot of some sort due to my stupidity. i am learning and improving for the better though.

for jazz: i find that gouramis may fair better in larger tanks, especially in my experience i have found the dwarf ones a bit more aggressive in a crowded tank. crowded, as in someone who does not take in account the fishes adult size to their tank space. a long time ago, before i knew anything .... i had six three spot gouramis in a ten gallon tank. to my surprise of what i know now, they did live over five years. i did not take care of them very well at all, you know all the newbie mistakes. but they adapted. maybe they were bred better back then, lol :D .

my sister had a handful of dwarf gouramis in a ten gallon tank and they just chewed eachother apart. the more room the better in my opinion.

that is just one opinion out of many people with more experience than i have thats for sure.

good luck to you. B)

I had a betta in a gourami tank once and they ripped eachother apart. The betta was constantly attacking the other various gourami and stressed them out so much that he had to be removed.

I also tried one in a community tank with danios and tetras. It was fine for about a month and then one day I came home to find the bettas tail shredded and some rather evil looks in the danio's and tetra's eyes.

Right now I'm trying it again in the same community tank with a shortfinned giant and it's going well so far (knock on wood.)

But overall there are way to many posts of gourami/betta aggression and I don't think it would be a good idea.

Before my tank self destructed i had a betta with 4 coral dwarf gouramis, 4 dwarf honey goramis, 4 siamese flying foxes, 5 corys, 13 neon tertas, 3 brisstle nose cats and they all got along fine

how big was ur tank?

Depending on the temperment of your betta, it could attack anything resembling another betta. Hence gourami's or any other fish with long fins. There are exceptions to every rule though. I would not try it personally but if you have to have the gourami, try it but watch carefully and make sure you have an evactuation plan just incase. :flex:
