Betta Tilting?

Hi all! I haven't been around here in ages, but I had hoped not to have to return and go straight to the emergency section. -_-

But I know this is the best spot to go for any questions regarding my fish, and my beloved betta, Darby O'gill is demonstrating a new strange habit, tilting to his side when he's resting at the bottom of the tank.

First though, let me give a bit of an outline about Darby's habitat. He's in a filtered 3.5g eclipse tank, gets 5 hikari pellets daily (2 in the morning, 3 at night), fasts on Sundays and on Mondays gets a microwaved, de-shelled pea to break his fast or an occasional treat of blood worms.
He gets 25% water changes weekly (aged and dechlorinated), and 100% water changes once a month or so.
I've had him since March of '07, so I'm assuming he's about 2 years old.
He's still eating like a horse, but seems to be a bit more lethargic than usual, and when he settles on the bottom of the tank, is leaning to the side.

I just did a 100% water change yesterday, and he seems very chipper this morning, although I have half a mind to think that he was just showing off to make sure I didn't declare it a swim bladder problem and decide to fast him again.
He doesn't appear to be favoring any particular side to tilt on, although if I had to hazard a guess, I would say maybe he tilts to the left more often.
Could he just be getting old and lazy? His behavior doesn't appear to have any other change aside from the tilting thing.
He certainly doesn't like it though... He's taken to propping himself up against his plant or the side of the tank to give him a counter balance.

He doesn't seem to be constipated. Although I haven't caught him in the act in a long time, I found plenty of pea green betta poos in the gravel when I did the cleaning yesterday.

He's had near constant problems with his fins since I got him (although it's never gotten as far as to look like fin rot), and I've treated him multiple times (in the past) with aquarisol, bettafix and had taken to adding a touch of aquarium salt to his water for an extra incentive to heal, although after this last water change I didn't add any salt- or anything else aside from dechlorinator.

Okay... I think that's all that I can think of.
I had one lady at Petco tell me that I was doing too frequent water changes, but I put that down as a ridiculous idea, although I did cut back from 50% water changes to 25% water changes.

I'd really appreciate some feedback if anyone has some suggestions for Darby.
:thanks:

Does he look bloated.
Try some peas.
Signs of bacterial infections are laying to onside.
Resting on plants.
Being lethagic and listless.
Being pale or darker in colour.
Sometimes not eating.
How long is it since you have not seen him go to the toilet.

I think I would add a bacterial med to his tank.

Thanks for the reply Wilder!
:thanks:

He might be a tiny bit fatter than usual... I'm not sure. He's never really been "fat" though, and I wouldn't describe him as fat now either.

He had pea on Monday and it didn't seem to do any real good, although I'm sure he would be more than happy to have another one today.
His coloring doesn't appear to have changed at all, and he's really pretty active today. He did an impressive wiggle dance this morning.
As far as how long it's been since I've witnessed him poo, I'd say quite a long time. He used to get excited during feedings and go then, but he hasn't done that in... two months? Perhaps more?
I'm certain that he is going though, since he tends to favor the front right side of his tank for that sort of thing, and I cleaned the gravel there just last week, and found some more when I did yesterday's cleaning.

Have any suggestions for bacterial meds that go well with a betta? I know they can be sensitive about meds, and I hate putting him through the stress of them.

Edit: I forgot to add, I have pimafix, melafix and aquarisol on hand.

Another thing I forgot to add is that his tank is pretty warm. Although he's in an air conditioned room, the temp in his tank is regularly above 80 degrees, and unfortunately I don't have any reliable way to keep it cooler.
I recall that bacteria thrives in warmer waters though, so that really ties in with your idea Wilder. And since Darby really has had a lot of problems with his fins despite regular water cleanings, I think you must be right.

I wonder if I should start doing two water changes a week instead of one. Would that mess up the cycle though?

Bacteria does thrive in warmer water.
Plenty of aeration in warm weather.
He dosn't sound right to me resting on plants and laying to oneside can be symtoms of a bacterial infection.
I would preform two small water changes once a week as its only a small tank.
Med uk anti internal bacteria med by interpet.
United states maracyn plus.

*Nods* I've added an air stone to his tank a few weeks back as the weather started warming up more. He loved it at first, playing in the bubbles and such, but he can't build his bubble nests any more.

Maracyn Plus. Okay, got it. I read on Petfish.net that Tetracycline and Jungle Fungus Eliminator are also supposed to be good.

I'll also start doing 2 water changes instead of the one per week. I want my Darby to live the longest life possible for Bettas.

I really appreciate your help Wilder, you're always so informed and understanding. :thanks:

Tetracycline is good but it wipes the beneifical bacteria out in the filter.
I would only advise antiobiotics if the fllter media wants wiping out, or you have another tank to take a mature sponge
to kick start the tank again.
Not sure how long betta live think it's 5 years but not sure.
Good luck.

Ahh, that's good to know! I don't have another mature tank anymore to get seed bacteria from either.
I have a 1g tank I use while cleaning the 3g, I suppose I could use that for a hospital tank instead. Unless- does the Maracyn not bother the cycle?

Maracyn knocks water stats but I don't think it wipes the bacteria out of the filter completely.
If you issolate in the other tank you will have to keep adding some flakes to keep the bacteria alive in your filter in his other tank.
Good luck, bless him.

Okay, gotcha. Thanks again Wilder. Really, I can't tell you how much of a relief it is to have some sort of action to take. I hate the feeling of not knowing what to do.
I'll make sure Darby knows you're rooting for him too. ;)
