is it usual for them to spend most of their time on the ground, has done ever since ive had him. he seems ok enough to me though (eats, takes gulps of air, chases his girls aroud). it is my first betta so i dont know what to expect

How long have you had him?
What size tank is he in?
What are the water readings for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and PH?
What other fish are in the tank with him?

hes been in there about 4 months, tanks been running for about 6, ammonia - none , nitrite - none, theres a little nitrate and the ph is fairly high about 7.6, tankmates include 3 female betta,6 zebra danios, 3 opaline gouramis, 6 corydora, and a bristlenose. i just wondered whether this behaviour was normal or if they are soposed to be a bit more active by swimming around a bit more lol, cheers for feedback

He's probably not happy in his surroundings to be honest.
Male Bettas should never be kept with females as they are too aggressive with each other. Gouramies should also not be kept with Bettas as they are both from the Anabantoid family and will fight over the same territory.
Zebra Danios can be nippy and will probably end up nipping at the Bettas tail.
Even though they may have been fine for this long, it doesn't take long before things start to change. Your male will be constantly on his guard and defending his territory which may have caused him to become stressed, hence him sitting on the bottom of the tank.
You would be best buying him his own little tank as he will be more than happy on his own.

Yep, they get along fine now, but it won't stay like that. Get that male away from the females, gouramis and danios. Everything stang said is true. Males and females should never be housed together. And the gouramis and danios aren't a good idea either. Get him his own "home" and you'll see him perk up, I bet ya :)

Although I agree with the majority of what stang has said... I have to disagree about the danios.
I've owned danios and they've never been nippy, not even with eachother... and not even to the slow moving guppies that were in the tank with them. Now that's not saying that they can't be, but all the ones we've ever had have never been. They just enjoy chasing eachother.

Some people have not had problems with Zebra Danios and some have. My Betta, Aragorn had his fins ripped to shreds after being kept in a tank with some at the store I brought him from.
I wouldn't recommend risking it but that's just from my experience.
