Betta Obsession.

heh..only problem with that idea is that im in college out in western Kentucky. the nearest LFS is a petsmart which is 45 minutes away...believe me, i've checked all over the place for anything closer...

my roomie, the one whose tank is overstocked, has mature filter media so i just cut a corner off her foam piece and dropped it in my tank..her nitrite readings are zero..but i noticed her KH and PH were on the low side..is it ok that i put the media in my tank? i was hoping the bacteria would transfer

Hi
Simply putting a piece of mature media in the tank wont do anything i'm afraid  Putting a piece of mature media in a new filter will help the bacteria colonise the rest of the new media  The kh and ph wont make any difference in this instance.

so if i put the mature media in my filter with the second sponge then it would help?

Yeh, mature media from one filter will help seed the rest of the media in the new one. Its called "Cloning". How long has the piece of media been in your tank?

the mature media has been in there about 3 hours..and the second sponge i added has been in there like 3 days maybe?

probaly not enought time to colonize and the test strips are notoriuosly not accurate, maby buy a liquid kit, and do 25 % water changes every day till niotrate is at 0

The one thats been in 3 hours should be good, stick it in your filter. You may as well put the other piece in too as it may still have some bacteria left :good:

But like Azulfire says keep a check on it :good:

The only thing that keeps me from getting a ton of bettas is the water changes. And the setting up of new tanks haha. I dont like it. I have another 3 gal so I will be getting one more betta. I'm going to stop at 2 though

Two, huh??? LOL - that's what I said and now I have NINE!!!! :hyper:

Yep...hate doing those water changes. Plus, surprisingly, I have good self control haha

I hate water changes. I try to have at least 5 gallons per betta in a cycled tank to avoid the constant changes. even when I have babies I have them in gallon jugs that I still change everyday.

:grr: :grr: :sly: :hey:
DIVIDERS, ATTACK! :shout: :shout:

Yes, the greatest tools which reduces the number of tanks so you sound like you don't have a lot of tanks.
Great idea? LOL. :)
Just wondering, but would undergravel filters work if you used dividers for all the sections?

I have a Betta obsession. D:
I wish there was a scientific name for it so people could understand and not think I was weird. :X

So far I only have one. This is the second Betta I've owned in my life; the first lived to a ripe old age, almost 5 years.
Anyway, I'm glad I have a Betta fish again, and you know how it is... I'm looking forward to the next one. And the next one. And the one after that. :)

that doesnt sound like a fight :p
haha
or if it was you barely came out alive...
once my boyfriend gets an apartment i forsee this problem growing ugly..i'll have a tank in every room!!!
plus im breeding guppies...jeez he bought me a tank for valentines day, he had no idea what he was getting into

Perfect! One tank in every room means BIG tanks - but don't forget to leave space in each room to walk around the tank, so you can still scrape algae and see it from all sides.
But I'd really suggest leaving the bathroom as is - you'll need it for water changes.
Of course, I'M not obsessed, so you can rely on me to help you keep control.
You do have at least a half-dozen rooms, right?
Or do you need to move somewhere bigger for a reasonable number of tanks?
