our betta has been acting different for the last few days. he usually spends most of the time swimming around but the last few days hes been spending a fair birt of time siting in his plant or on the bottom. he swims around every now and then or when were near the tank and he thinks hell get food.

tried feeding him a pea 2 days ago and didnt feed him yesterday to see if that helped but hes still the same

any idea what could be wrong.

water stats

ph 8
ammonia 0
nitrite 0
nitrate 10

Bless him resting on the bottom can be constipation, glad you tryed the peas, did he eat them.
Does he look bloated.

he dont look bloated. he did eat some pea not sure how much as the shrimp take whatever he misses. we have him 5 or 6 months id say roughly

Could be constipation.
Signs of bacterial infections with no visable symtoms are as follows
Being pale or darker in colour.
Being listless and lethagic.
Not eating.
Another signs is resting to onside on the gravel or plants.

hes got all of the above excep for the eating part. what steps should i take to treat him. there are also some amano shrimp in the tank

If he's not bloated and tryed the peas and he's resting alot it could be a bacterial infection.
More the parasite meds with strimps.
Anti internal bacteria med by interpet.
Increase aeration in the tank as med reduce 02 in the water.

Sorry I meant you cannot use parasite meds with strimps.
But I think bacterial meds are fine, do a search to be on the safe side.

Be careful adding meds to a tank with shrimp in it, a lot of meds contain copper which is fatal to shrimp, read the labels carefully, If it doesn't explicitly say it if safe for shrimp and/or snails I would be wary about using it.

You really need to move the betta or the shrimp into a temporary tank while you treat the betta, then you wont need to worry about the meds hurting the shrimp.

Any idea how old he is? Also what temp is the tank? Any chance the water temp dropped to low?

dont know how old he is, temp reading about 25c on stick on thermometer. actually turned it down a bit a few days ago as it felt much warmer than my other tank when i put my hand in. maby i should turn it up again?

got Anti internal bacteria med by interpet. removed shrimp to community tank and treated fighter tank. hpoefully this will sort him out. thanks for help. will let you know his progress

Good Luck :good: The interpet med i used on my betta for fin rot did a great job so hopefully it will work well for you.

When he's better you should run some carbon in the filter to help clear the meds from the tank before the shrimp go back in.
