My friend's betta died a long time ago from jumping out of its tank. When I got mine, I thought i covered it well enough, but the little guy managed to jump out!! He fell about 5 feet to the floor and layed there for around an hour. It was awful.. the carpet is had fuzzballs and it stuck to him. To my surprise, he survived! I didn't feed him for 24 hours like some forums said, and now he is eating again... but a little bit of his skin is stripped off and part of his tail fell off. I had him for about a week and he didn't jump out until I got a heater. It used to be 68-70 degrees F and now with the hydor mini heater it is 80-82 F. Is this too hot? Will the fin on my betta ever grow back?

Thank you

No, its not too hot. My tank sometimes gets up to 85f and my old buddy was still fine. Not sure about his fins though, i once had a female that got her fins bitten off, and they didnt grow back, but iv heard lots of people talking about fins growing back. It would be best to get some medicine and stress coat which will make him feel better and should help his fin heal.

80-82 is on the warm side. See if you can knock down the temp just a bit. If not, no worries.... just monitor that the temp is below 82.

85 is not acceptable. disregard that advice.

They can be sneaky buggers. A couple years back I had a a similar incident where my betta was out of the tank for a potential 30 minutes after sky diving 4 feet down to the floor. Certainly tough fish eh?

It is difficult to give you proper advice due to the lack of explanation of his tank/maintenance. His scales and fins will grow back with proper care though. They may not be quite the same, but fins can be encouraged to grow back with pretty decent results.

Provide some more info on tank size/filtration, water changes, etc. In the mean time, betta fix is a very reasonable treatment for fin regrowth that will not compromise your beta's health when used properly. Regardless of the tank, 25-50% water changes every other day or so is a sure fire way to keep him healthy while he is recovering.

WOAH ReMz...where they been keeping you? good to see you back!
sorry to hijack.
cheers

Haha. I was trolling around the forums to get some opinions on Purigen for the tannins in my 55g and decided to stop by the betta section :p

Good to see some of the old members still around. :D

That's amazing he still lived!!! And in nature, they live in small pools of water in the mud(made by bufflo's hoofs), and that's why they can tolerate poor water conditions. But naturally, they jump out of those pools, to different ones to have a better climate, or to breed, ect. Your fish probably needed something else to be happier. Do some research and find out what its habitat is lacking.

i dont think they solie live in buffalos foot prints

they mainly live in rice paddies and rice paddies are constantly wet so theres puddles

How do they get to these footprints? Between the buffalo's toes?

ahahahahaha ahahahahahahahahahaha....... ha....... .... ha

:hyper:

those nomadic, foot-print jumpers are incredible aren't they?! thanks for the laugh.

.... sigh. I like Loraxchick's signature here: "common sense is becoming far less common"

Don't believe everything some yo-yo writes on the internet and do some actual research into the heritage of betta splendens.

:good:

The betta is doing great now! He's making bubble next again. I put some sand in the tank.. i dont know if that is dangerous for it. He eats all the food I feed it now, compared to before i got the heater... it was 68 F most of the time. The fins are starting to grow back as well.. With the tank cover I made it's impossible for him to jump out :D

GREAT to see you back ReMz!
cheers
Tell me something I don't know ;)

edit: oh yeah... cheers!
there's that humility i remember

to the OP-
sorry to kind of hijack. how is the betta doing today? hopefully no worse for wear from his jumping escapade.
cheers

These darn bettas! I just made a post about a betta jumping his way into some serious trouble (see the shredded fins post).

I've heard that fishes become more active kept at higher temps. Maybe that's why he jumped. I'm amazed that he survived. Did you rename him Carpet Fuzz?
