Hey All,

Just wanted to make you aware of this issue that has become a main talking point on another website.

Not sure if you have heard about this but its basically a Betta in a Vase with Flowers.

A flower shop somewhere in America started selling these however the plant is doing fine because of the ammonia in the water from fish waste but they put a cork in the top of the vase which means that there is no gas exchange.

They say that this can be done but it has to be done right.

Just wanted to get the opinions of some experienced fish keeps.

AH MAH GOD, BETTA'S IN SMALL TANKS WITH NO FILTRATION. NEVER EVER HEARD OF THIS BEFORE... CALL THE GESTAPO!!!......

With respect, the question wasn't about whether other people put Bettas in small tanks.
It was to do with this particular implementation;

I'd have to ask, "Is it possible for the fish to provide all that the plant needs, and the plant to provide all that the fish needs?"

If so then I would think it is ok, (fish needs of course including filtration and oxygen), but I don't see how the Betta would feed.

Besides, as with most, I don't think it's nice keeping a betta in a small space, but it does happen.

This is too small to keep a fish in. All fish need some room to swim, so this is plain cruel. Even if the plant manages to take all the ammonia out of the water, the betta still needs to breathe air, so corking it is so wrong. Yeah, some bettas may live for months like this, but they would have to be very strong and resistant. And yeah, how does he feed? My bettas get fed twice a day, so why bother with a cork if you are gonna have to keep taking it out?? Weird. Plus it is hardly fair to let the betta live like that, with no stimulus, no plants to rest on, caves to sleep in. Some people are just plain stupid with no regard for life.

The common misconception with those betta in a vase kits is that the betta can feed off the plant roots, however, bettas are omnivores (leaning toward the carnivorous side) and need meaty protein in their diet. It is true the plant will use ammonia for food and will provide oxygen for the fish, but, it won't work in the long run due to the betta's dietary and space requirements. Most people unfortunately consider bettas to be disposable fish (after all they're cheap and they sell them in small cups :rolleyes: :angry: ) and if the fish lives a few months that's considered good. Many of the betta keepers here can tell you that wit proper care a 2-3 year lifespan is considered normal, and 5 years isn't unheard of.

It will work for 2 to 4 months until the betta dies of starvation. As mentioned, they don't eat plants. I guess somewhere along the lines he might start nibbling on the plants since he has no other food but it won't be enough.

I agree with the above poster. They've been selling these in the US for at least a decade.

they've been around for a while...it seems the betta eats the small microorganisms that live off the roots of the plants. It wouldn't be that cruel if they gave it some real food, and maybe some filtration. I keep my betta in a large vase(only temporary cycling my 10 gall for him :)) with a lot of plants and do regular water changes and feed him both live and pellet food..
