Betta Ill :( **pictures Added**

i think my fish might actually only be about 8months old actually.

I feel quite bad as ive only had the tank about 2 months, and at first i overstocked it by accident but then the betta ate 7 of the neons in 2nights :/ putting me back to where i am now with a good amount of fish.

3 brislenoses
1 zebra danio
3 neon tetras and the betta.

ive not lost a fish due to the water quality, but I didnt do a water change for the first 4weeks as i thought you were ment to leave it to cycle :/ anyway in that time i had tried to get plants to live in with no success so the water turned a bit smelly so i got some stuff that took the white cloudy water and made it clear and that worked. but now is only the first time ive cleaned the gravel (ive obviously netted out uneaten food and given it a bit of a clean but not a full clean)

i also changed the filter block thing the other day :/ which i think was a bad idea as someone said ive probobly restarted the cycle :/

anyway all beginners mistakes and learnt from.

but its my fault he's in this way now :( just hope ive caught it early enough.

ps 2 of the neon tetra had a few white spots on them the other day (now they only seem to have 1 on them each)... i might go and buy some ich stuff after just reading about it but after the vigerous water change i did today i might just keep an eye on them instead.

and the 3 bristlenose guys are doing awesome and theyve grown pretty fast now there about an inch big and pretty fat :p

ps

its more like a totally washed out colour / maybe slightly fluffy ( i read a treatment for something called velvet in the shop but i dont think its this, maybe )

nothing stringy (other than today after adding the melafix and the airstone there seems to be a couple of stringly bits with bubbles attatched to him but i assumed that was just the infection clearing a bit.

yeah weekly water changes of around 25% of the water are ideal to keep things going, do you have a water testing kit?
it sounds like those neons probably have white spot, which you can treat just with salt and heat, when they drop off is when they release more spores....so watch out for more white spots appearing!
How big is your tank out of curiosity? Bristlenoses get really quite big!
nah velvet affects all over the fishes body and makes it look like they've been coated in a sort of goldish dust, your betta doesn't look like he has that.

I cant treat with salt with the bristlenose guys can I?

im not sure if they are bristlenoses... but thats what i remember there called.. these ones only grow to 5cm max said the sign on there trank at the lfs. they are brownish with creamy spots.

i do have a water testing kit - results above^

copied here...
gh - about 140
kh about 180
ph about 7 / 7.5
no2 about 5 and no3 about 80 (which were 0 the other day)

does gh and kh mean much?

im not sure what my no's are right this minute but ill try them again in the morning.

I dont have ammino testing which is a bit crap but ill just keep on top of water changes and hope thats good.

the water should all be grand now the only thing im thinking is from the dirty water with dead plants ect a couple of weeks back maybe a lot of crap has been stored in the sand which is still making the water poor.

after the rinse out before this should have sorted that theory tho.

and its a 30l tank, current temp is 27degrees.

Ive only got a really small rena filter at the mo, i might invest in a better one or an external one as im most likely going to get a bigger tank and keep this one just for a betta and some frogs once things have settled down.

http://www.aquariumlife.net/profiles/pleco...leco/100049.asp that is a BN pleco, gets to 5 inches, which if they are that, are gonna be too big even for 1 in your 30L....so good you have plans for new tank

not sure about those water tests....you really need to get ammonia and nitrite test kits ASAP!!!

Salt should be fine with the plecos, my tiny pitbull pleco was fine with salt :)

its not one of them :D thank god, haha ill get a picture :p

I know i should get an ammonia kit :/ wish i just shelled straight out for the liquid kit.. ive spent probobly about £200 on fish stuff already and have hardly anything to show for it :(

are they bulldog plecos? they are very small like my pitbull :)

awww that sucks....it is a money grabbing hobby, especially when things go wrong.....I've shelled out so much for meds and my tanks not even 6 months old :( just got unfortunate with bacterial strain!
which reminds me better go feed my fighting fish, he looks like he's waiting on me! lol

hehe i hope so! i just seen a 180l tank 5miles away on ebay.. ill keep my eye on that as the heater at the mo is suitable for a tank that size and its only on £20.
