I saw this at petsmart when I went to buy cat and bird food.

What do you guys think of it?

Anyway, I want another betta but I'm not sure if petsmart is the best place to buy one from. I know I would be rescuing one from tiny cups with blue water but are they the healthiest to buy?

My first betta was rescued from an apartment where the previous tenants left the betta and birds behind and never came back (not to mention it was the middle of winter last year). The betta was half dead and seemed really unhealthy. But it survived the cold for 6months then passed. I was never sure what was wrong with it.

Yeah thats exactly the housing that gets loads of angry posts on here so most people will be complaining about it, since your in the US have you looked at Aqua bid?

I think it is an inappropriate home. I just never seen it before.

I looked at it. I don't really want to ship fish since it is winter. Maybe I will set everything up and wait till it warms outside. Would that be a better idea? Or do you think it's safe to do it in winter?

I just got my 6 in yesterday and all survived. They went from Thailand to Denver to Georgia and all are happy. They will be terrified when you first get them of course.

I don't plan on having something that small. I thought about using my 20gallon and planting it heavily. Or maybe buy a 10 gallon.

I'll think about shipping the fish though.

Ugh, that's one of the worst. It's larger than a lot you see on here, but the air pump is the really awful thing... an air pump in that amount of water would give the betta hell.

You know, I bet it would look really nice if you set up the aquarium and put some glitter and light beads in the water, and then set it up with the air pump. Sort of like a lava lamp but not quite a lava lamp if you know what I mean... it's an interesting idea, I bet you could copy it. I'd be inclined to try actually, if my bedside tables weren't both holding betta tanks!

The aquabid sellers will include heat packs, but most of them don't know what cold weather is really like, so it's not uncommon for bettas to die in shipping during the really cold months... personally I wouldn't risk it, it's quite expensive anyway, but it's supposed to be quite safe during the warmer months.

It would be bad for a betta but it would make an interesting sea monkey habitat lol

The betta I rescued almost died from the cold. The water was way way freezing, maybe 50F. The fish never recovered fully :\ He had trouble swimming up to get air and to eat.

awwwww!!!!! hes gotta sad look on his face that just says 'im freezin, somebody kill me' ohhh, poor fishy. RIP

This was after a week :\ He was laying on his side, not moving. I thought he was dead at first.

He would lay on his side a lot and his eyes were semi popped out. You can kind of tell there. What type was he?

He was a crowntail, and in health would have been a very beautiful fish.
Popeye can result from a variety of causes, but an internal infection would not have been surprising, following the appalling circumstances of his abandonment.
At least you gave him decent care for the last bit of his life, and he didn't die forgotton and alone...
