Fungus can grow on dead tissue.
But if the wound looks clean and healing everything sounds fine.

Just to clear up the confusion, Bettafix is Melafix diluted to make dosing easier. When added as directed Bettafix will give exactly the same concentration of active ingredients as using Melafix.

There is also no need to half-dose or under-dose when using Melafix with Bettas. Melafix has been tested with Bettas and it does not cause them any problems.
